What is the GPL License in WordPress and how does it work?

At GPLClub, we want to ensure that all our customers understand how the GPL License works and what it implies when using WordPress themes and plugins. This concept is essential to understand why certain elements are or are not included when you download resources from our platform.

What is the GPL License?

The General Public License (GPL) is a free software license created to guarantee users’ freedom to:

  1. Use the software for any purpose.
  2. Modify the software according to their needs.
  3. Share copies of the software with others.
  4. Distribute modified versions of the software.

In the case of WordPress, its entire core, as well as many of the themes and plugins developed for it, are protected by this license. This means you can use, modify, and share them freely, within the conditions of the GPL.

What does the GPL License not include?

It’s important to understand that the GPL License covers only the software code, not external elements or additional services. For example:

  • Automatic updates: Although you can access the software, it does not include the automatic update service offered by the original developers.
  • Direct technical support: Many developers offer support as part of a subscription or commercial license. This is not covered by the GPL.
  • Premium content: Some themes or plugins include additional content, such as premium templates or images that are not under the GPL. These elements usually require a commercial license; however, we try to include them through other means, but they might sometimes not be available.

Why don't we offer commercial licenses?

Because we are a GPL Club and it is our main focus, it is the only way we can offer these very low prices, and it is not always feasible to share commercial licenses because they have usage limits; however, we have some (more than 30) as a benefit for members.

In summary:

The GPL License is a powerful tool that democratizes access to digital resources. However, it’s important to be clear that it does not include additional services such as technical support or automatic updates, which are usually available through commercial licenses.
