About 301 Redirects Pro
Your 404 log has a seven-day memory
You change your URL structure and come back three weeks later to check what broke. With the factory settings, the WP 301 Redirects PRO log has already deleted everything older than 7 days, including the addresses that failed right after the change.
In a migration, the log retention period decides which errors you will ever get to see. That setting sits in the General tab and is worth changing before you move a single URL. It can keep the log by days, up to 60, or by number of events, up to 1,000.
WP 301 Redirects PRO manages redirect rules inside WordPress, monitors 404 errors and can send someone who reaches a mistyped address to a similar page. Its features do not include editing titles or structured data: it takes care of URLs reaching their destination.
Each rule picks its code, parameters and turn
Each rule defines these settings:
- Redirect type: 301 and 308 for permanent changes, 302 and 307 for temporary ones. 307 and 308 keep the request method. The cloaking option hides the target URL behind the source URL.
- Query parameters: ignore them all, require an exact match in any order, or ignore them and pass them to the target.
- Position: rules are checked in order and lower numbers go first.
The asterisk works as a wildcard in the source and stands for any string of zero or more characters, so /blog/* covers many posts. Slashes count as any other character. For finer cases, regular expressions capture parts of the URL with named groups and reuse them in the target, for example to remove a date or move a category.
Position has a trap: if a broad rule goes first, the specific one may never run. Give the specific rule the lower number.
The auto-redirect looks for likeness, not intent
With Autoredirect 404 on, most 404 errors are sent to an existing page with a similar URL, which handles typos well. It affects posts and pages, and you can add other post types.
If several pages are similar, the one alphabetically closest to the mistyped address wins. That choice is based on the text of the URL, so for the addresses that matter most to you a hand-written rule is safer.
If it is off or finds nothing similar, the 404 page is shown. Bad bots get no automatic redirect: they stay on the standard 404. Google is whitelisted.
The log and its email reports
The redirect and 404 logs open with statistics graphs, which you can hide, and show the most recent entries first. The Group button groups entries by URL or by IP.
Email reports are off by default. They are enabled separately for 404s and redirects, with one email every 24 hours or every week. They go to the WordPress admin email unless you enter another address.
Preparing the site to move URLs
Install it in WordPress and follow this order:
- Raise the retention of both logs, up to 60 days if you will review late.
- Create the rules for your important pages, with the specific ones in low positions.
- Test each rule with the shield icon, which shows the result and status code. This test does not work on local hosts.
- Turn on Autoredirect 404 and check where the most frequent typos end up.
Redirects from a different starting point
SEO Redirection Premium covers 301, 302 and 307, with groups, a visit counter per rule, wildcards and a 404 error manager, and it also creates an automatic 301 redirect when a post's address changes.
If you would rather keep everything in the SEO plugin, Rank Math SEO Pro imports redirects from the usual SEO plugins.
Wildcards and the free version
What does it add over the free 301 Redirects plugin?
Wildcards, regular expressions, automatic typo fixing and a complete log. It also lets you ignore, add or remove query parameters, while the free plugin keeps them and appends them to the target.
Can a wildcard span several folders?
Yes. Slashes get no special treatment, so the asterisk can cross them. Check that the rule does not capture more than you intend.
