There is no leaving an LMS: the students live inside it

A theme gets changed in an afternoon. A form plugin gets replaced and nothing happens. A course platform does not: inside are the enrolments, the completed lessons, the quiz marks, the issued certificates and each student's exact progress up to yesterday's class.

That makes the LMS the piece with the least margin for error on the whole site. Not because it is the most complicated, but because it is the only one whose content cannot be rebuilt: the design can be laid out again, two hundred students' history cannot.

Which is why here the licence looks more like insurance than a purchase: what it guarantees is that the platform holding all that keeps receiving fixes and has somebody to ask when something fails.

When it pays

If you charge for the training. When the student pays, the site becomes a service with obligations: if the player fails or the certificate does not come out, somebody is waiting and entitled to complain.

If the school is going to grow. An LMS's problems appear with volume, not with ten test students, and that is when official support stops being an extra.

About licensing and the GPL

The code is distributed under the GPL licence and its use is free. Updates, support and activation against the maker's servers are separate services contracted with them. They are not the same thing, and buying one is not buying the other.
