About Add To Cart Redirect for WooCommerce
After «Add to cart», the customer decides whether to keep going or leave
In many stores the moment after adding a product is left to chance: the page reloads, a green notice appears and the customer has to find the cart on their own. It is exactly the point where they have already decided to buy and where you can still set the next step. Add To Cart Redirect for WooCommerce lets you choose where each customer goes at that moment.
Before setting it up, think about how your customer buys. If you sell a single product or one-item purchases, jumping straight to checkout removes friction. If customers usually fill the cart with several items, sending them to checkout after the first one cuts the purchase short and you will end up selling less. A redirect is neither good nor bad in itself: it depends on your buyer's habits.
From shoes to basketball: a gift promotion, step by step
Imagine you give away a basketball to anyone who buys a pair of shoes. Here is how it would be set up:
- Step 1: you open the shoes' product page and fill in its redirect field. There is a built-in search to pick products, pages, posts or public custom content, or you can type a custom URL.
- Step 2: you configure the redirect so the basketball is added to the cart automatically. The customer does not have to look for the gift or remember it.
- Step 3: if you also want to apply a coupon automatically, you need the WooCommerce URL Coupons extension. This plugin on its own does not create or apply coupons.
- Step 4: you test the journey as a customer, with a specific variation and with a product that has no rule, to check that each case ends where you expect.
Think of it as the mechanism that moves the customer from one page to another, not as a promotions engine with offer rules.
Common questions before touching the redirects
Can I send each product to a different destination?
Yes. You can set the redirect per variation, per product, per category or globally.
Does it work with variable products?
Yes, there is a specific setting for variations and it has the highest priority.
Can I only redirect to store pages?
No. You can choose products, pages, posts and custom content types that are public, or type any URL.
What happens with anything I do not configure?
If no rule applies, the default WooCommerce behavior stays in place.
Does it apply coupons by itself?
No. For that you need WooCommerce URL Coupons alongside this plugin.
Five priority levels so the most specific rule wins
When several rules could apply at once, Add To Cart Redirect resolves them in order:
- Variation: the most specific.
- Product: the rule for one particular item.
- Category: the same destination for a whole group of products.
- Global: the store-wide rule.
- Default behavior: what WooCommerce does if nothing is configured.
This way you can keep one global rule (for example, go to checkout) and make exceptions only where it matters, without going through the whole catalog.
A mandatory stop at the terms before the customer keeps shopping
If a product has special conditions, you can send the customer to the terms page right after adding it, so they read them before continuing. Keep in mind it is a redirect to a page, not an acceptance checkbox, so if you need the customer to explicitly confirm something, you will have to handle that another way.
The plugin requires WooCommerce and is compatible with high-performance order storage (HPOS).
