About Aelia Tax Display by Country for WooCommerce
Selling to several countries with WooCommerce brings a problem you only notice when complaints arrive: the same VAT-inclusive price is shown to people who will not pay that VAT, and a visitor from outside the EU thinks your shop is more expensive than it is. Others skip the country field at checkout and end up with a wrong address or validation errors.
An order from Germany and another from the United States, step by step
Picture a shop that has VAT set up for EU countries and none for the rest. Here is how Aelia Tax Display by Country for WooCommerce behaves at each step:
- The visitor arrives: the plugin detects their country from their IP address using geolocation. It relies on GeoLite data from MaxMind.
- They browse the catalog: you decide, rule by rule, whether each country sees prices with or without tax. The German visitor sees them with VAT and the American one without it.
- They want another country: if you enable the plugin's widget, they can choose their billing country before reaching checkout.
- They reach payment: the country is already preselected and the billing and shipping address is prefilled.
Fixed prices: charge everyone 100 euros, VAT included
You set a price of 100 euros including VAT and every customer pays exactly that amount, whatever VAT applies to them. It also works on manual orders created from the admin.
Be clear about what it implies: if the customer does not pay VAT, the VAT is taken out of your 100 euros rather than added on top. It is a margin decision, not just a display one.
What Aelia Tax Display by Country does not touch: tax rates
The plugin does not create or update rates. You enter the correct rate for each country in the WooCommerce tax settings, or use an external service that does it automatically. If a rate is wrong, the plugin will display a wrong price with perfect accuracy.
It does not issue invoices either. WooCommerce handles those together with the invoice plugin you choose, and the VAT applied to an order will appear in emails and invoices.
Configuration details worth having
- A different price suffix for each display rule, for example to indicate whether the amount includes tax or not.
- An option for visitors to declare themselves tax exempt and always see prices without tax.
- Compatibility with Aelia Currency Switcher, if you also want to offer several currencies.
As a requirement, it needs the Aelia Foundation Classes (AFC) plugin for WooCommerce, in addition to WooCommerce.

Does it show the same VAT on the invoice?
Invoices are handled by WooCommerce and the invoice plugin you use. The VAT applied to the order will appear on them.
Can I show VAT to the EU and hide it from the rest with the same final price?
Yes: combine the per-country rules with the fixed prices feature.
Does it work with several currencies?
On its own it shows prices with or without tax. For different currencies there is Aelia Currency Switcher, with which it is compatible.
Can customers correct their country?
Yes, if you show the widget in the shop. IP geolocation is not always right, so it is worth enabling.
