About AutomateWoo – Birthdays Add-on
Your store can't remember anyone's birthday
Greeting a customer on their birthday is a good idea that almost nobody carries out: you need the date, you need to remember to check it and you need to send the message on time. Doing it by hand makes it easy for it to stay an intention.
AutomateWoo – Birthdays Add-on handles that part: it stores the birthday on the customer's record and triggers an automatic email before, on or after the date, with an optional coupon. But understand one thing before installing it: the scarce resource isn't the email, it's the date. You will only have the birthday of those who want to give it to you.
Two places to ask for the birthday: checkout and My Account
The add-on adds two optional fields, and you decide whether to enable one or both in the AutomateWoo settings:
- A birthday field in the checkout process.
- A field in the My Account area, inside the account details.
- A notice so the customer knows they will get a treat for sharing the date, which is what gives them a reason to fill it in.
You also choose whether to ask for the year of birth or only the month and day. To greet someone and send a coupon, month and day are enough, and you store less personal data. Since the field is optional for the customer, only those who want the perk share it.
One birthday, three moments to write to the customer
The add-on gives AutomateWoo a trigger called Customer Birthday. With it you build a workflow that runs before the birthday (an advance heads-up), on the day (the greeting) or after (a reminder). The emails are designed in AutomateWoo's workflow editor: you can put the customer's name in the subject and in the message, add an image or a GIF and keep your brand's look. There is also a birthday variable to personalize the greeting.
If you want to accompany the message with a discount, you can generate a one-time coupon inside the workflow and send it in the email. The birthday is also useful beyond the yearly email, thanks to two rules, Customer – Next Birthday Date and Customer – Last Birthday Date, which you can use in other workflows:
- A treat-yourself abandoned cart email for anyone whose birthday is this month.
- An extra gift on orders placed during the customer's birthday month.
- A win-back email tailored to customers with an upcoming birthday.
Is this add-on enough, or do you need AutomateWoo first?
This plugin does not work on its own: it needs AutomateWoo installed and active, because AutomateWoo runs the workflows and the add-on only contributes what is specific to birthdays. It fits stores that already use AutomateWoo or plan to, especially fashion, food and beverage, beauty, gifts and other consumer brands where a timely gesture can prompt a purchase. Results depend on your store, your audience and the offer you make.
Can I use it without AutomateWoo?
No. Without AutomateWoo there is no workflow engine, so the add-on does nothing by itself.
Does it collect birthdays from customers without an account?
No. The fields appear to logged-in customers, at checkout and in My Account. If account creation at checkout is turned off in your store, no birthdays will be collected. Check this before launching the campaign.
Can I import the birthdays I already have in another plugin?
There is no built-in import. Migrating dates you already have would require custom development; if you are starting from scratch, the natural route is to collect them with the add-on's own fields.
Can I send a different coupon to each customer?
Yes. A one-time coupon is generated inside the workflow and goes out in the birthday email.
