About AutomateWoo – Subscriptions
When a renewal fails, the customer often finds out too late
Selling subscriptions has a problem that one-off sales don't: the payment happens without the customer doing anything, so it can also be lost without anyone doing anything. An expiring card, a declined payment or a subscription that changes status alerts nobody, and the customer disappears without ever deciding to leave.
That is the part of the business almost nobody watches: many cancellations are not a decision, they are an oversight. AutomateWoo – Subscriptions makes each of those moments trigger an automatic response instead of depending on you remembering to check.
The subscription events you can turn into actions
The add-on lets you act on whatever happens to a WooCommerce subscription. The cases that make the most sense in practice:
- Status changes: when a subscription moves from one status to another, you can launch a message or an action in response.
- Failed payments: you can act when a payment fails.
- Renewal reminders: you can act based on a renewal reminder.
- Saved card expiry: you notify the customer before their credit or debit card stops being valid, which with subscriptions can reduce failed payments.
Three workflows worth building before any other
You don't need to automate everything. Start with what protects the most revenue:
1. Expiring card notice. A clear message arrives before the problem and not after.
2. Response to a failed payment. Tone matters: someone with a failed charge is not a defaulter, it's almost always someone with a changed card. A friendly, direct email works better than one that sounds like a demand.
3. Reminder before renewal. Especially useful on annual plans, where the customer no longer remembers signing up.
If you also use the rest of AutomateWoo, you can combine these notices with its other tools (personalized coupons, campaigns for inactive customers), but be clear about which part belongs to this add-on and which to the main plugin.
Are the WooCommerce emails enough, or do you need AutomateWoo – Subscriptions?
If you sell few subscriptions and can write to each customer with a failed payment yourself, you probably don't need it. It starts to pay off when volume makes manual follow-up unworkable and every avoidable cancellation weighs on your recurring revenue.
Keep the main limit in mind: it reacts to WooCommerce subscription events, so it does not replace the system that manages the subscriptions or charges anyone by itself. It is an automation layer on top of a store that already sells with subscriptions. Also check the main plugin's documentation to see what you need installed for it to work.
Is it useful if I don't have subscriptions yet?
No, it makes no sense: its value lies in subscription events. Without them, there is nothing to automate with this add-on.
Does it recover failed payments on its own?
It doesn't charge again or fix a card. What it does is alert the customer so they are the one who solves the problem.
Can I warn customers before a card expires?
Yes: it lets you notify the customer before their saved card expires.
Is it only for sending emails?
Check in the demo which actions are available for your workflows.
