About AutomatorWP - Tutor LMS

A failed quiz is a signal your academy lets go by

A student fails a quiz, closes the tab and does not come back. Tutor LMS saved the result, but nobody saw it in time. By the time you review your student list, that person has left feeling the course was not for them.

In an academy, the best moment to keep a student is right after they get stuck, not the day you review the list. This add-on turns those moments into AutomatorWP triggers: passing, failing, submitting an assignment, finishing a lesson or reaching a certain grade can start an automatic response.

It does not create courses or quizzes, and it does not decide what to tell the student. It connects what happens in Tutor LMS with the automations you define.

The 17 triggers and five actions of the add-on

  • Quizzes: attempting, passing, failing, getting a grade, or finishing with a percentage greater than, less than or equal to the one you set; attempting, passing or failing also work by category.
  • Lessons and courses: completing a lesson or a course, also within a category.
  • Enrollment: being enrolled in a course or in a course of a category.
  • Assignments: submitting, passing, failing or getting a grade.
  • Reviews: reviewing a course.

Its own actions work on enrollment and progress:

  • Enroll the user in a course.
  • Unenroll them from a course.
  • Mark a lesson as completed.
  • Mark a course as completed.
  • Reset their progress in a course.

The two filters check whether the user is enrolled in a course or not. They keep an automation from acting on the wrong person.

What the free edition of AutomatorWP covers

Three triggers are free (attempting a quiz, completing a lesson and completing a course), along with one action, enrolling in a course. The other fourteen triggers, the other four actions and the two filters are PRO.

To react to a failed quiz, an assignment or a specific grade, then, you need the PRO part.

Three automations to try

These are combinations of the pieces above. Test each one with a trial student before activating it:

  • Tutoring after a fail: when someone fails a quiz, send an email proposing a tutoring session. That email is another action in your automation, not one of the five Tutor LMS actions.
  • Sale and enrollment: when someone buys a WooCommerce product, enroll them in a Tutor LMS course. The purchase trigger is not one of these 17: it depends on the WooCommerce integration.
  • Next level: when someone completes a course of a category, enroll them in the course that follows.

Setup with Tutor LMS and AutomatorWP

You need Tutor LMS and AutomatorWP on the same WordPress site. Then:

  1. Install and activate the Tutor LMS add-on.
  2. Create an automation in AutomatorWP.
  3. Choose a Tutor LMS trigger, such as failing a quiz.
  4. Add the action and, if needed, an enrollment filter.
  5. Run a test with a trial user.

To connect beyond Tutor LMS

AutomatorWP Pro connects plugins with triggers and actions, and lets you chain them. AutomatorWP Webhooks is for exchanging data with other applications. Uncanny Automator Pro takes the same idea with recipes of triggers and actions. To extend the academy itself there is Tutor LMS Pro.

Grades, assignments and enrollment, in six answers

Can I act on a quiz grade?

Yes. There is a PRO trigger for percentages greater than, less than or equal to a value.

Can I reset a student's progress?

Yes, with a PRO action that resets their progress in a course.

Can it unenroll people automatically?

Yes. Unenrolling from a course is a PRO action.

Does it work with assignments?

Yes. There are PRO triggers for submitting, passing, failing and getting a grade.

How many triggers can I put in one automation?

As many triggers and actions as you need.

Does it connect to external services?

That connection belongs to the Webhooks add-on, which is separate.
