Translating a whole site by hand never ends
Setting up a multilingual site with Polylang is the easy part. The hard part comes afterwards: every new post, every page and every correction forces you to repeat the work in every language, and the translated version ends up out of date compared with the original. AutoPoly – AI Translation For Polylang (Pro) tries to take that repetitive task off your hands with AI translation inside the WordPress dashboard itself.
The initial translation is a one-off cost, but maintenance is permanent: the site lives as long as you publish, and publishing in three languages triples the effort of every update. A tool like this makes the most sense if you publish often.
What AutoPoly translates and where its limits are
The plugin works on top of Polylang, so it uses the languages you have already configured. Its main features:
- AI translation of posts and pages, plus menus, widgets and custom post types, so the translated version is not left half done.
- Customizable rules: you can exclude specific pages and manually edit any translation inside the interface.
- Dashboard where you see the status, queue and progress of translations, and an option to enable or disable providers.
- Bulk translation, with an optimized mass request.
- Several translation providers: DeepL (with Hindi support added) and a setting for Chrome's built-in AI.
The limits should be clear. It is not a standalone plugin: it needs Polylang installed and active, because it does not manage languages on its own. And automatic translation is no substitute for review: for legal texts, technical sheets or brand messaging, check the result before publishing. Manual editing exists for that.
Frequently asked questions about AutoPoly
Does it work without Polylang?
No. It is a Polylang add-on and needs Polylang for languages.
Does it limit the number of languages?
It is not designed with a language cap: you translate into whatever your site needs. What matters is what you have configured in Polylang.
Can I correct what the AI translates?
Yes, translations can be edited manually in the plugin's interface.
Can I leave some pages untranslated?
Yes, you can set rules and exclude specific pages.
Does it also translate menus and widgets?
Yes, besides posts and pages it covers menus, widgets and custom post types. If you use very particular content types, test one first.
Choosing the translation provider is a quality decision
Quality does not depend only on the plugin, but on the engine behind it. That is why the dashboard lets you enable and disable providers. If your site is technical or has a lot of its own vocabulary, compare the output of two providers on the same page before launching a mass translation. A couple of tests save you from correcting hundreds of texts later.
Start with one page and expand from there
The sensible way to get going is the opposite of the temptation to translate everything at once. With Polylang already active and your languages configured, translate one representative page first, review how it looks and adjust the exclusion rules. Then move on to bulk translation by content type. That way you quickly spot which texts need a human touch and which come out fine the first time.
