About Blackhole Pro Plugin
A bad bot doesn't announce itself: it crawls your site around the clock, looks for vulnerabilities, copies content or leaves spam, and you only notice when the server slows down or resource use climbs. Blackhole Pro tries to stop that at the source with a trap.
The blackhole trap: how it catches bots
The plugin places a hidden link that a human visitor never sees or clicks. Bots that crawl without respecting the rules do follow it. When they do, they fall into the trap and get blocked. You don't need to watch anything: it works in the background.
You decide how patient the trap is
Not every bot that slips up once is an enemy. That's why you can adjust:
- Threshold: how many warnings a bot gets before it is blocked.
- Messages: choose the warning and blocked messages, or write your own.
- Redirect: send blocked bots to a URL of your own.
- HTTP status code: define which one is returned.
- Trigger link: customize it, exclude it on specific posts or pages, or disable it (advanced use).
Bot log: know who visits without permission
Every blocked bot is kept in a log with its IP, the request, the user agent and other data. You can search, filter, sort, paginate, see how many times each one has been blocked and check its geographic location by IP. You can also delete selected bots with one click or add one manually by its IP address.
Email alerts also notify you of every blocked bot, with IP and a complete Whois lookup. The template is customized with shortcodes and you can set the sender and recipient addresses. If your site is attacked often, those alerts can fill your inbox: think about whether you want to receive all of them.
Whitelists: let the good bots keep coming in
Popular search engines always have access, so you shouldn't lose rankings because of the trap. If you use external services that crawl your site, you can allow them by user agent, by IP or by entire IP ranges, and redirect them to a different URL. You can also block bots by their user agent.
It doesn't work well with caching enabled
This is the limit that matters most before buying. Caching should not be used together with Blackhole. If your site relies on a caching plugin to run fast, you will have to choose between the two or review the configuration carefully.
- What it already solves: detecting and blocking bots with the trap, logging each one, alerting you by email and allowing whitelists and blacklists.
- What you'll cover separately: a full firewall, malware scanning or login protection. It works alongside other security plugins, but doesn't replace them.
- What you'll do yourself: review the whitelists so you don't block legitimate services.
