About BP Default Group Tab
When every group opens on the same tab, someone gets lost
In a community with several groups, always landing on the same default tab helps no one. A fashion group lives on recent conversation, a study group revolves around its forum, and a neighborhood group only needs to show who is inside. If everyone lands in the same place, new members pass through a tab they don't care about before reaching the one they do.
BP Default Group Tab solves exactly that: each BuddyPress group decides which component it opens with. The idea almost nobody considers when building a community is that a group's first screen is its reception desk, and every group has a different kind of visitor.
A fashion group, a training group and a neighborhood group: three different landings
The choice is made group by group, so you can set up each one according to what it does.
If you run a community with very different groups
You can leave activity as the landing page in a fashion group and the forum in an education one. There is no global setting forcing everyone into the same thing: each group has its own.
If you are a group admin and not a site admin
By default, both site admins and each group's admins can change the tab. It is done from the group itself, in Admin, on the Settings page. That way you don't have to ask anyone to touch the configuration for you.
If you use group extensions from other plugins
The plugin works with BuddyPress plugins that add tabs through Group Extensions. It is also compatible with BuddyBoss Platform.
Who can change the tab and how to restrict it
If you prefer group admins not to touch anything, there is a filter called bp_default_group_tab_user_can_update_tab. It receives the current permission (true or false) and the user ID, and returns whether that user can change the tab. A simple example is limiting it to site super admins only.
A useful safeguard: the plugin only changes the landing tab if that tab is accessible to the user who enters. This avoids 404 errors when a member has no access to a particular component.
Frequently asked questions about BP Default Group Tab
Can I set a different tab in each group?
Yes. The choice is per group, not global.
Where is it configured?
In each group, under Admin and the Settings page.
Does it work with tabs added by other plugins?
Yes, with BuddyPress plugins that use Group Extensions.
Can I stop group admins from changing it?
Yes, but it requires adding a small code snippet that uses the filter mentioned above. There is no on-screen checkbox for it.
It needs BuddyPress and only decides the entry tab
It is an add-on: without BuddyPress (or BuddyBoss Platform) it has nothing to configure. It also does not create new tabs or change their content, it only chooses which one is shown first. And if a member cannot see the chosen tab, they are not forced into it.
