About BuddyBoss Integration Addon for MEC
A community with active groups and a separate events calendar often ends up as two worlds that don't talk to each other: members organize meetups in the group, but the official event lives on another page and nobody finds it. This plugin connects the two: each BuddyBoss group can have its own list of Modern Events Calendar (MEC) events.
Events that belong to the group, not to the site
In a community, the value of an event depends on who sees it. A photographers' meetup matters to the photography group, not to the whole network. With BuddyBoss Integration Addon for MEC, events are assigned to specific groups and each group has its own events tab.
A practical detail: if you are inside a group and click Create New, that group is automatically selected for the event.
Three ways to assign an event to a group
- From the profile: under Events you see the ones you created, open one and choose the group in a dialog box.
- From the group: in its Events tab, with the Create New button and the group dropdown in the form.
- From the admin: when editing the event in MEC, under Event Details, the BuddyBoss Group field.
You can also build filtered calendars with a MEC shortcode, including or excluding specific groups. Useful for a page with the agenda of a single group.
Who can create, edit and delete events
Permissions are set on two levels and they should match. In the MEC settings you choose the submission roles, both WordPress and BuddyBoss ones (moderator, organizer and members). Then, in each group, under Manage > Events, you decide whether all members, only organizers and moderators, or only organizers can create, edit and delete.
If the global roles and the group roles don't match, the Create New button does not appear. It is the most likely problem when getting started. If you use heavily customized WordPress roles, check that they have the capabilities to edit and publish posts, because the submission form needs them.
The integration options that change the experience
- Add an Events section to the BuddyBoss menu.
- Define the date and time format in the feeds.
- Hide group events from the general calendars, if you want them to be exclusive.
- Include events in the site's social filters.
- Show an event preview in the activity feed.
- Hide the back-to-list button in the submission form.
Private groups are not visible from outside
This is the limit that surprises people most. An event assigned to a private or hidden group does not appear in public calendars, so it doesn't work to promote it to people who are not yet members. And logged-out visitors don't see group events unless you enable the option to show the single event if it is in a public group.
- Already solved: assigning events to groups, an events tab per group, permissions per group and group filters in calendars.
- You cover it: creating the two pages with the [MEC_fes_list] and [MEC_fes_form] shortcodes and linking them in the MEC submission settings.
- You cover it: having BuddyBoss installed and configured, with Social Groups enabled, and MEC up and running.
Frequently asked questions
Does it work without BuddyBoss or MEC?
No. It is an add-on: it needs both active, and social groups enabled in BuddyBoss.
Can I assign an event to several groups?
It is a reasonable question for your case: try it in the demo before planning the calendar around it.
Does a group event still show in the general calendar?
By default it may appear. If you want it to be exclusive to the group, enable the option to hide group events from the general calendars.
Why don't I see my events in the group?
Check that the event is assigned to the group in Event Details and that the group is public, because private or hidden ones don't show in general views.
