About BuddyPress Message Privacy(BuddyDev)
When private messages turn into harassment or spam
In a BuddyPress social network, anyone who registers can write to any other member. One pushy user is enough for someone to receive unwanted messages, ads or harassment, and the affected person has only one way out: stop using the community. As an administrator, you end up arbitrating conflicts you often never see, because they happen in private inboxes.
Most large networks let each person decide who can write to them. BuddyPress Message Privacy gives you that same control inside your community, without you having to moderate message by message.
Three privacy levels and two lists per user in BuddyPress Message Privacy
Each member sets in their profile who can send them messages. There are three options:
- Everyone: anyone can write to them.
- Friends only: only the people they have as friends. This option appears only if the BuddyPress friends component is active.
- Custom list: only the users they choose themselves.
In addition, each member can create an allowed list and a blocked list. Allowed users can always write to them, whatever level is chosen. Blocked users never can, even if the level is open to everyone.
Blocked users can't reply either
The block also covers replies: if someone was in the middle of a conversation and is moved to the blacklist, they can't keep answering in that thread. You can also block from the screen of a specific message, without going looking for the settings.
Limits worth knowing
- It is an add-on plugin: it needs BuddyPress active.
- The super admin can write to anyone, even if blocked. If your moderation team is not super admin, it won't have that free pass.
- It controls private messages only. It doesn't filter activity comments, mentions or other interactions.
- It doesn't detect spam by content or moderate text: the users themselves decide whom they admit.
Frequently asked questions
Can a blocked user keep following an already open conversation?
No. The plugin also stops replies from blocked users.
Can a setting be forced for everyone?
There are filters designed to disable user settings. There is no panel that imposes a global rule.
Does it work with the follow plugin?
Yes, it includes privacy support with BuddyPress Follow.
Is it translated?
All texts are translatable and can be loaded from the WordPress languages directory. It includes a German translation.
Does it work with the Nouveau theme?
Yes, it is compatible with the BuddyPress Nouveau template.
Blocking is decided by username
To add someone to a list, the member identifies them by username. There is a hook to use the friendly name (nicename) instead, useful if in your network users are known by another name. You can choose between username and nicename from the admin, so decide it before opening the community.
After activating it, test with two test accounts: set one to friends only, try to write to it from the other, add that account to the allowed list and then block it. That way you will see exactly what your members will see, and you can explain it in your help pages or community rules.
