Recovering a cart needs an email address, and that is the problem
Most abandoned cart plugins only capture the contact details of somebody who reached the checkout step and typed their email before leaving. And that is a minority: people abandon much earlier, looking at the cart, when they see the shipping price or when they get distracted. Of those you have nothing, and they are the bulk.
CartBounty attacks that with early capture: a popup asking for the email right after adding to the cart, long before the customer reaches checkout.
What it does with that contact
- Automatic email series, from WordPress or through your usual email tool.
- Unique coupons generated for that specific reminder.
- Personalised content with the customer's name and the products they left.
- Other channels: text messages, WhatsApp and browser notifications.
- Exit intent popup, for the moment the visitor moves the mouse towards closing.
It also records carts from people who are not logged in, not only those from customers with accounts.
What to think through before enabling early capture
It costs something. A popup asking for an email right at the add-to-cart moment interrupts the purchase, and some people find it annoying enough to leave. It may pay off handsomely, but it is a trade-off and worth measuring: look at overall conversion before and after, not just how many emails you collect.
And above all, permission. Writing to somebody because they left their email in a popup requires that the email was asked for clearly and that there is a record of what for. A field saying "we will save your cart" and then used to send promotions does not comply.
What works and also complies: saying in the popup itself that you will write to remind them about the cart, linking to your policy, and offering an unsubscribe in every email. That way the reminder is expected, and an expected reminder converts better than one that surprises.
