About Charitable Spam Blocker 1.0.5 beta
You open the donation report and half the entries are $5 attempts nobody made: bots testing cards on your form. For a nonprofit that is not just noise: it fills your inbox with notifications, muddies your reports and distracts whoever runs the campaign.
Charitable Spam Blocker: a Captcha for the donation form
It is an add-on for Charitable, the donation plugin, and it does not work on its own: it needs Charitable installed. It adds a layer of protection to donation forms through a Captcha. You install it, activate it and follow the instructions to choose one of the supported Captchas.
From the first suspicious notification to a protected form
Here is a typical case, step by step:
- Step one, you spot the problem: donation notifications arrive that actually come from a bot.
- Step two, you activate the plugin: it does nothing useful until you configure it. This step is mandatory.
- Step three, you choose the Captcha: there are two supported options, Google reCAPTCHA (Invisible V2) and hCaptcha.
- Step four, you paste the keys: they go in the settings panel, under the Security tab.
- Step five, you decide who gets challenged: you can leave logged-in users without a Captcha or require it from everyone. If your recurring donors usually log in to their account, the first option saves them a step.
Frequently asked questions about Charitable Spam Blocker
Does it work without Charitable?
No. It protects Charitable donation forms, so it depends on that plugin.
Can I use a different Captcha?
Only the two mentioned: invisible reCAPTCHA V2 and hCaptcha.
Does it switch on by itself when installed?
No. Until you add the keys under Security, the form is not protected.
Is the Captcha visible to the donor?
Check in the demo how the Captcha you choose appears before publishing.
What the 2.0 beta adds, with caution
The 2.0 beta adds tools that go beyond the Captcha:
- Rate limiting (Stripe only): you define how many attempts are allowed within a period of time before that IP is automatically blocked.
- A math problem on the donation form.
- Recording of donation IPs.
- Deletion of all pending or failed donations, from Charitable's advanced settings.
Since it is a beta, it is best to test it first in a staging environment and not in the middle of a year-end campaign.
What it does not solve
A Captcha reduces spam, but it is not a complete security system and does not replace a well-configured payment gateway. Rate limiting works only with Stripe, so if you receive donations through another gateway, you can count only on the Captcha and the other aids.
