Lighter images without changing a single URL
Images are almost always the heaviest part of a WordPress page, and converting them to modern formats is one of the few things that genuinely improves speed. The problem is how: most solutions change the file addresses, which means auditing old content, fixing broken links and hoping no plugin depends on the original path.
Converter for Media avoids all of that. It converts the images and serves them through an **invisible redirect**: the original URLs do not change. The browser requests the usual image and receives the lighter version without noticing.
Which formats it uses
WebP and AVIF. The free version does WebP; Pro adds AVIF, which weighs roughly 50% less than WebP for the same file.
Delivery is decided per browser: AVIF to those that support it, WebP as a fallback, and the original format to those supporting neither. AVIF already works in around 92% of modern browsers, Chrome, Safari and Edge among them.
The detail that avoids nasty surprises
It does not modify the original files. New versions are generated and the originals stay untouched, so deactivating the plugin returns the site to how it was, with nothing lost.
How it converts
Processing happens on the plugin's servers, not yours. That matters a great deal on shared hosting, where converting a thousand images locally means running out of execution time or having the host kill the process halfway.
There is one-click bulk optimisation of what you already have, and automatic conversion of everything you upload from then on. It also resizes images that are too large.
How conversions are counted
This is worth reading carefully before subscribing. **Each converted image counts as one conversion**, and a single uploaded file generates several sizes in WordPress, so it counts as several. On top of that, converting to WebP and AVIF at once uses two conversions.
In practice: a library of 500 photos is not 500 conversions, it can be several thousand. Worth doing the sum against the image sizes your theme generates before choosing a plan.
