Core Framework for Figma

The design and the site never end up being the same thing

It is the familiar wear of any project with a designer and a builder. In Figma the spacing is twenty-four and on the site it ends up at twenty. The brand blue appears in three slightly different shades. A colour changes in the design and nobody remembers to touch it on the site.

Core Framework attacks that at the root: instead of design and code being two similar things, it makes them share the same system. This licence is what connects the two halves.

What Core Framework is

A design system and a styling framework built visually, without writing CSS. You define the colours, the spacing scales, the typography and the components, and out of that come the classes and variables later used when building.

It works as a browser application and as a WordPress plugin, where it integrates with the block editor, with Bricks and with Oxygen, with no separate licences for each.

What the Figma side brings

The synchronisation. With the licence key set in the Figma add-on, projects sync between the Core Framework application or the WordPress plugin and Figma itself, using the project identifier or the access key.

The practical consequence: the designer works in Figma with the same variables and the same components the site will have. There is no translation in between, and therefore no loss. When a design decision changes, it changes in the system, not in two places.

Who it pays for and who it does not

It pays in teams where design and development are different people, and in agencies building many sites that want all of them to start from the same system instead of reinventing it every time.

It does not pay if you work alone and build directly on the builder without going through Figma: you would be assembling a workflow for a problem you do not have. The styling framework itself has an open, free version, so you can try it before deciding whether the synchronisation side is what you need.

About licensing and the GPL

In the WordPress ecosystem the code is distributed under the GPL licence and its use is free. The Figma synchronisation is a service validating against the maker's servers, like their support, and is contracted with them. They are not the same thing, and buying one is not buying the other.
