About Directorist dList – WordPress Theme for Business Directory Listing

A directory is judged by the first search

Building a directory of businesses or places often ends in a good-looking site that returns zero results when someone searches for «restaurants in Denver». The visitor doesn't come back, and without visitors no business wants to appear on your site. That circle is the real problem for anyone installing a theme like dList, far more than the design.

dList is built so that first search works: the homepage form combines category and location, and the demo shows it with categories such as hotels, restaurants, shopping or outdoor activities, and cities such as Atlanta, London or New York. The sensible approach is to start with a few cities and a few well-covered categories, rather than offering a huge list of empty filters.

The dList filters that help visitors make a choice

Below the main search there is a «more filters» panel that turns a vague search into a concrete choice:

  • Search radius in miles, for people looking near a given point.
  • Minimum and maximum price, plus levels from $ to $$$$.
  • An «open now» switch, very useful for restaurants and shops with opening hours.
  • Tags, ratings, custom fields and payment method (card or bank transfer).

The miles and the dollar sign come that way in the demo. If your audience uses kilometers or euros, check in the demo how to change them before committing.

Homepages, maps and author dashboard already built

There are three homepages (standard, video and map) and listings in grid or list view, or with a map in one, two or three columns. Each card shows category, rating, price, whether it is open or closed, location and phone number, with featured and popular labels to highlight the businesses you care about.

It also includes an add-listing form, registration and login, author profile, user dashboard, category and location pages, FAQ, contact and blog. Whoever publishes a business gets their own space without you having to build it page by page.

Is dList what your directory needs?

It fits if you want a general directory of businesses, places or services with plenty of filtering and a map view. Think twice if you need online bookings or payments inside the site: what the demo shows is listings and search, not a booking system.

Does it work for a real estate portal?

Categories and locations let you organize it, but the demo is about leisure and local businesses (hotels, restaurants, shopping). For properties you would need fields such as floor area or bedrooms: check in the demo that you can create them.

Does it come with real content?

No. The testimonials, articles and listings in the demo are examples with placeholder text, and you will have to replace them with your own before publishing.

Can I charge businesses to appear?

The demo shows featured listings, but it doesn't show payment plans. If your model depends on charging to publish, check in the demo how that is handled before deciding.

Can I show businesses on a map?

Yes, there are map listings in three different layouts and a homepage with a map.
