About Directorist Multi Directory Linking

Two directories that ignore each other: doctors in one, hospitals in another

Having one directory of hospitals and another of doctors often ends up as two islands. A visitor looking at a doctor's page wants to know which hospital they work at, and someone looking at a hospital wants to see who works there. If each directory lives on its own, that relationship gets lost or is typed by hand into the description.

This extension is for anyone who already runs several directory types on the same site and wants their listings to cross-reference. Links between listings answer the visitor's questions: who, where, with whom.

  • It needs the Directorist plugin installed, it doesn't work on its own.
  • It makes no sense if your site has a single directory type.
  • It links listings that already exist on your site; it doesn't import listings from other sources.

How Directorist Multi Directory Linking connects listings

It adds a field for linking between directories. In the add listing form, the person publishing chooses which listings from other directories they want to link. On the single listing page, visitors see those connected listings.

  • You can link any listing of one directory to any listing of another.
  • A single listing can show linked listings from several directories at once.
  • Pagination keeps a listing with many links from turning into an endless page.

The field is placed by dragging it in the directory builder, on both the add listing page and the single listing page.

The link as a selling point in your paid plans

A service listing, such as a tutoring academy, can show specific tutors that live in another directory type.

You can reserve this feature for a premium plan and leave a free plan without it. That way linking between directories becomes a concrete reason to upgrade. Keep in mind that paid plans are handled by Directorist itself; this extension only provides the feature you decide to include or not in each one.

Also, more information on the listing helps visitors decide.

Who links, how many links and under what title

From the Directorist builder you control how the field behaves:

  • Change the heading of the connected listings block, so it says "Doctors at this hospital" instead of something generic.
  • Restrict it to administrators, useful if you'd rather curate the relationships yourself and not let anyone link.
  • Make it required when submitting a listing, so no listing gets in without a connection.
  • Limit the selection to a single item or several, depending on whether a doctor works at only one hospital or at several.

If you leave it open to users, check in the demo how the selector looks when there are many listings and whether it suits the size of your directory.

Frequently asked questions about Directorist Multi Directory Linking

Can it be reserved for certain users?

You can leave it for administrators only, or include it in a premium listing plan if you use paid plans in Directorist.
