About Directorist Pricing Plans

Building a directory and letting everyone publish for free usually ends the same way: lots of content, no income, and advertisers who see no reason to pay. When you decide to charge, you hit another problem: each type of user needs something different, and a single price doesn't fit everyone.

Charging for listings: the logic behind Directorist Pricing Plans

A plan defines a specific set of features for a specific price. Directorist Pricing Plans lets you create as many plans as you need, each with different features. In a directory, the one who pays is the one who publishes, not the one who searches. Your product is the visibility you give to the listed businesses, so your plans should grade that visibility and not just the number of listings.

A walkthrough: from the free tier to the plan that renews itself

Step 1: define the plan types

You can choose between two plan models:

  • Package plan: the user buys a set of features and publishes within that package.
  • Pay per listing: each listing submission is charged, useful for someone who publishes only once.

Step 2: add a trial plan

You can create a plan with limited features for a specific period so users can try before buying. It lets a business see how its listing looks before deciding to pay.

Step 3: include featured listings as a selling point

Plans can offer featured listings. It is the natural step between the basic package and the premium one: paying more to appear better.

Step 4: set the duration, limit and expiry

Each plan has duration and subscription settings, a listing limit and an option for what happens when the plan expires. Decide this before opening sales, because it changes what the user expects to buy.

Step 5: turn on renewals and taxes

You can charge on every recurrence of the chosen period, although it depends on the selected gateway. Automatic renewal with Stripe or PayPal produces steadier income. You can also add taxes or VAT to the plans. That helps you show the price with taxes, but the tax side remains your responsibility.

What it needs to work

It is not a standalone plugin: it requires the base Directorist plugin. To actually collect payments you also need a Directorist payment add-on, with which it is compatible. By itself it defines the plans, but it is not the payment gateway. If you want recurring subscriptions, plan around Stripe or PayPal.

Frequently asked questions

Can I have unlimited plans?

Yes, there is no cap on plans. That said, it is best to keep them few so users don't get lost when choosing.

Does it work if I charge for single listings?

Yes. There is a pay-per-listing model, as well as packages.

Can I offer a free trial?

Yes, with a plan of limited features for a defined period.

Do renewals work with any payment method?

Not necessarily. Recurrence depends on the chosen gateway, and Stripe and PayPal are the ones that allow automatic billing.

When you don't need Directorist Pricing Plans

If your directory is free for everyone or you charge manually outside the site, this add-on is unnecessary. It pays off when you want to scale rates by type of user, with its simple setup and few options to adjust.
