About Directorist WPML Integration

A single-language directory leaves half your audience out

Building a directory only to discover that part of your visitors search in another language is frustrating: listings don't show up in their searches, they can't understand the categories, and the confirmation email arrives in a language they don't read. Directorist WPML Integration connects Directorist with WPML so all of that content exists in several languages, without writing code.

The key to a directory business is that the content is posted by others (the owners of each listing), and that complicates translation: you don't translate a page, you translate a catalog that grows every week. That is where this integration earns its place: it treats listings, categories and locations as translatable content, not as exceptions.

What Directorist WPML Integration translates

  • Listings: you can create or translate each listing into several languages.
  • Taxonomies: categories and locations can be translated too.
  • Archive pages: listings and the category and archive pages can be shown in several languages.
  • Search: the search page is localized for international users.
  • Directorist dashboard: the user dashboard becomes multilingual.
  • Email templates: emails can be offered in several languages.
  • Settings and directory types: the settings panel strings are easy to translate, and a directory type translation is created in one click.

How it fits depending on who you are

If you run a directory that is already live

Your problem is the existing content. The integration lets you translate the listings you already have, and automatic translation gives you a first draft that you can review and edit before publishing. It is faster than starting from scratch, but check the important parts: business names, addresses and commercial descriptions need a human eye.

If you are launching a directory aimed at several countries

It makes sense to translate the directory type, categories and locations from the start, because navigation hangs on them. That way each visitor browses the whole site in their language, from search to the individual listing.

If you work for a client with a directory

WPML also provides translation management features and an interface for ordering professional translation if the client doesn't want to rely only on automatic translation.

It needs Directorist and WPML installed

This is a bridging add-on: it doesn't work on its own. It requires the Directorist plugin and WPML. Nor does it convert content by magic: new listings from your users will still need their translation, either reviewed automatic or professional.

Frequently asked questions

Can I translate categories and locations?

Yes, taxonomies such as categories and locations can be translated into several languages.

Is the translation automatic?

There is automatic translation, and you can check and edit the result before publishing it.

Are the emails users receive translated?

Yes, email templates can be made multilingual.

Do I need to code anything?

No, the idea is that you can do it without writing code.

Before you decide

If your directory will live in a single language, you don't need it. If you already use WPML, or plan to, this integration keeps the directory from being the one part of the site left untranslated.
