About Easy Digital Downloads Git Update Downloads

For people who publish their own code and already manage it in git

Uploading a new version of a plugin or theme to your store usually means downloading a zip from the repository, renaming the main folder, deleting what's left over, re-zipping and uploading it by hand. With several products or sites, that ritual eats hours.

This plugin is for people who sell software with Easy Digital Downloads and keep their code on GitHub or Bitbucket. It's no use if you sell e-books, PDFs, courses or music: there is no repository to pull from. Nor is it for you if your code doesn't live in git, and it needs Easy Digital Downloads installed, because it is an extension of it and doesn't work on its own.

From version tag to downloadable file

The flow is simple: in the EDD download you choose the repository and the version tag, and the plugin does the rest. It fetches the zip directly from git tags or releases, updates the download file and gives it the right file name.

  • Public and private repositories: it supports both.
  • Zip from tags or releases: the zip is fetched directly from git.
  • Automatic file and name: the rename and re-zip step disappears.

Git Update Downloads and the changelog with Software Licensing

If you also use the EDD Software Licensing extension, the plugin can update the version number and the changelog for you. For the latter it reads the readme.txt file in the repository and extracts the changelog from it. That implies a practical condition: your readme.txt has to be well kept.

Without Software Licensing you still save the zip step, but you maintain version and changelog by hand.

Going back when a version goes wrong

Every software seller eventually publishes a version with a bug. Here, rolling back means changing the version number and clicking fetch: the plugin brings back the zip of the previous tag. Remember that it only changes the file you offer: anyone who already downloaded the faulty version still has it.

What it doesn't solve

  • It doesn't compile or build your code: it fetches the zip as git generates it at that tag. If your plugin needs a build step (dependencies, minified assets), the repository or release must already contain the result.
  • Fetching zips from tags or releases is a feature meant for GitHub. If you work with Bitbucket, check in your workflow that the tag you choose returns the package you expect.
  • It doesn't handle payments, licenses or delivery: that stays in EDD and its extensions.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work with private repositories?

Yes, it supports both public and private repositories.

Can I use it without Software Licensing?

Yes, for fetching the file from git. Automatic version and changelog updates are the part that depends on Software Licensing.

Where does it get the changelog from?

From the readme.txt file in the repository.

Can I go back to an earlier version?

Yes: you change the version number and click fetch.

Is it for selling products that aren't code?

No, it is designed for code hosted in git.
