Easy Digital Downloads Recurring Payments Addon turns those products into subscriptions that bill themselves.
The customer who leaves rarely cancels: they forget to renew
With automatic billing, customers don't have to decide again or retype their card, and you stop chasing payments. This add-on brings that mechanism to your Easy Digital Downloads store.
How to set up a subscription with Recurring Payments Addon
- Periods: daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, semi-annually or yearly, with the number of repetitions and the amount you choose.
- Variable pricing: each variation can be recurring or one-time, with its own options.
- Free trial: of any length. Payment details are collected at signup and the charge happens automatically when the trial ends.
- Signup fee: lets you charge more up front. Example: 50 up front on a 20 per month product is handled with a signup fee of 30.
- Discounts: a coupon can apply only to the first payment or to every renewal.

You sell software, plugins or themes
It integrates with the Software Licensing extension: each subscription payment renews the license automatically, and customers can see and copy their keys from their dashboard.
You sell a pass for the whole catalog
With the All Access extension, the subscription renews the access period when it expires. You can limit access to certain products or give each pass a different duration. Combined with Software Licensing, it lets you create master licenses with pro-rated upgrades.
You sell content or training
With Content Restriction you can reserve posts, pages or bbPress forums for those who own the product and have an active subscription. You can also limit file downloads to active subscribers: if someone cancels, they lose access until they renew.
You accept donations or pay-what-you-want contributions
It is compatible with Custom Prices, so you can offer pay-what-you-want subscriptions.
Management panel, notices and reports
From the admin you can search subscriptions by customer, filter them by status (active, pending, cancelled), open one and find its payment in Stripe, PayPal or another gateway. You can also change the status by hand, add notes and record manual payments.
Customers receive automatic emails: upcoming renewal, renewal processed, subscription cancelled, failed payment and more. You can use them to remind people why they should renew or to suggest other products. In their dashboard they can see the invoice, change the payment method, cancel or renew a recently expired subscription, and keep several independent subscriptions if they buy several recurring products. Reports separate new purchases from renewals.
It needs Easy Digital Downloads and a compatible gateway
It doesn't work on its own: it is an add-on for Easy Digital Downloads. Compatible gateways are Stripe and PayPal (included in EDD), Authorize.net and, from third parties, NETbilling, Paddle and Payfast. To update a card without admin intervention and for a fuller integration, combining it with the Stripe Pro extension is recommended. The integrations with licensing, all-access passes and content restriction require their own extensions.
