Internal linking is the only part of SEO that depends on you alone

Everything else is shared with somebody. Outside links depend on somebody else linking to you. Position depends on an algorithm that changes without notice. Speed depends on the server.

Internal links do not: they are entirely yours, decided from your own dashboard, with nobody's permission required. And even so they are the first thing abandoned, because linking four hundred articles by hand is work that is never urgent and never finished.

The result shows on any site with a few years behind it: the same ten posts receive everything and the rest live without a single link pointing at them. It is not that they rank badly, it is that to the search engine they barely exist.

When it pays

When the site no longer fits in your head. With twenty articles you link by hand. With four hundred you no longer even know what you have published, and that is where automation stops being convenience and becomes the only way to do it.

On projects with content arriving every week: blogs, news portals, niche sites and shops with many categories, where every new piece should be sharing and receiving links from day one.

A warning that is better heard early: automating without judgement shows. Putting forty links into a thousand word text, or always repeating the same keyword, makes the page worse rather than better. Start with a short number of links per piece and raise it while watching what happens.

About licensing and the GPL

The code is distributed under the GPL licence and its use is free. Updates, support and activation against the developer's servers are separate services contracted with them. They are not the same thing, and buying one is not buying the other.
