About Essential Grid Gallery WordPress Plugin
A gallery that depends on someone ends up out of date
The latest project is already on the blog, the new video is already on YouTube, but the portfolio page still shows last year. Nobody decided to leave it like that: updating it was one more task, and it kept slipping.
Essential Grid assembles grids from content that already exists: posts, pages, custom post types, WooCommerce products, galleries and social media. The idea that justifies installing it is simple: a grid fed by what you already publish keeps itself current, while one built by hand starts aging the day you finish it.
That is why the first decision is where the content will come from, and design comes after.
Content sources and what each one asks for
- WordPress: posts by category or tag, selected pages and custom types, such as the products WooCommerce adds.
- Vimeo: needs no API key, just the ID of the user, album, group or channel.
- YouTube: a Google API key and the channel ID.
- Flickr: an API key.
- Instagram and Facebook: an access token, from a connected account or entered manually.
- Twitter: four different keys.
- Behance: no longer issues new keys, so it only works with an existing one.
Layouts, skins and grid navigation
Grids can be even, masonry or cobble, with adjustable rows, columns and spacing, and boxed, full-width or full-screen width. The visual skin editor lets you change the style, position and behavior of the elements on each card, and create several variations. There are more than 50 templates to start from.
- Filters: one at a time or several at once, with AND or OR logic.
- Deep links: an address with a hash and the slug opens the grid already filtered.
- Sorting and search: sort criteria for the visitor and a search field.
- Loading: pagination, or a load more button or infinite scroll, plus lazy loading with a blurred image or background color.
- Lightbox: opens a single item or lets visitors move through all of them without closing it, and can show only those matching the applied filters.
Filters, sorting and search need their navigation module placed in a grid zone.
The limits of a well-fed grid
Essential Grid displays content, but it does not create or classify it for you. Its filters are as useful as the categories and tags you use, and if your posts are unorganized, the grid will make that visible.
Social sources depend on the keys and tokens of each service. Count on that initial work and on reviewing the grid if a service changes its access terms, as already happened with Behance.
First grid in WordPress
It installs like any plugin, by uploading the zip under Plugins, Add New. Then:
- Create a grid and set in the source whether it is based on posts, pages and custom types.
- Narrow the content by categories or tags.
- Choose the layout and a skin or template.
- Add the filter, sort or search modules you need.
- Decide between pagination and progressive loading.
- Publish a test post and confirm that it appears in the grid.
Comparing before settling on Essential Grid
If filtering is the core of the project, WP Grid Builder brings more than 20 facet types on taxonomies, post fields or custom fields, with Ajax search.
For a portfolio, Visual Portfolio offers six layouts and is inserted as a block in the editor. And if the problem is hundreds of images, FooGallery focuses on managing that volume.
Essential Grid essentials in five questions
Can it show WooCommerce products?
Yes. WooCommerce products are chosen like any other content type.
Do I need API keys for social networks?
Nearly all of them ask for one. Vimeo is the exception among the available sources.
Can I link to a specific category of the grid?
Yes. With deep linking on, add the hash and the filter slug to the page address.
Can pagination and load more be used together?
No. Progressive loading only works with pagination disabled.
Does it update when I publish something new?
If the grid is based on your posts or a connected social source, yes. Items chosen by hand stay as you left them.
