About Event API Addon for MEC

When the same event lives on three websites, someone ends up with the wrong date

If you run events and publish them on your website, on a partner's site or in an app, the usual approach is copy and paste. It works until you change the time, cancel a session or add a speaker: then one of the copies goes out of date and the attendee arrives with the wrong information.

Every manual copy is one more place where a change has to be fixed. Event API Addon for MEC moves your event data through a defined route (JSON, scripts and shortcodes) instead of relying on you remembering to update every website.

Event API Addon for MEC takes your events out as JSON or as a script

It is a Modern Events Calendar add-on that opens an API so you can take your events out of the site where you manage them. It does four things:

  • Data transfer: it passes the information of your single events and your shortcodes from one website to another.
  • JSON files: you download your data as JSON and read it from any platform or web application.
  • Script download: you take away your own script for the destination website or application.
  • Domain management: you limit the API to a specific domain or leave it open to all of them.

It requires MEC Pro: without it, the add-on has nothing to offer. And it is a transfer tool, not a designer: the JSON is raw data, so how the events look in the destination application depends on that application or on whoever develops it.

Common questions before connecting two websites

Does it only work between WordPress sites?

No. You can copy events between websites, but the JSON and the script are also meant to show your events on any platform or web application, not just WordPress.

Can I take a whole calendar or only single events?

The add-on deals with single events and shortcodes. If you need to move something else, try it in the MEC demo before committing.

Do I need to code?

To integrate it into your own application, you will most likely need someone who knows web development.

Does it work without MEC Pro?

No, it requires it.

The authorized domain decides who can read your events

Publishing your event data so other websites can use it has a practical consequence: anyone could try to use it. That is why domain management is the function most worth looking at. If you work with a single partner website, limit the API to that domain. If your idea is for many third-party websites to show your schedule, leave it open to all domains, knowing that you then do not control who uses it.

This matters most to anyone with a central calendar (an association, a venue, an organizer with several brands) who wants the other websites to draw from a single source instead of maintaining copies.

Active right after installation: first decide the domain

The add-on activates right after you install it. Before using it, it helps to be clear on three things:

  • Which website or application will receive the events and under which domain.
  • Whether you will move single events, shortcodes or both.
  • Whether the destination needs a JSON file to read or a script that is already prepared.

Once that is decided, the rest is downloading the file or the script and placing it at the destination. If the destination is your own application, tell whoever maintains it before you start.
