About Extended Widget Options Plugin

The banner for the offer that expired three months ago

The sidebar is the one corner of a site that usually shows the same thing to everyone: the new visitor, the registered customer, the person arriving on a phone and the one reading a post in another category. And since hardly anyone reopens the widgets screen, a promotion notice ends up living on for months after it finished. Extended Widget Options tackles exactly that: it adds rules to each widget and each block so you decide who sees it, when and where.

Extended Widget Options: visibility rules on every widget

Each widget gains options you switch on with checkboxes, without writing code:

  • Pages, content types and taxonomies: show or hide a widget on specific pages, on each custom post type or by categories and terms.
  • Device: mobile, tablet and desktop separately, so the mobile sidebar does not carry everything from the desktop one.
  • User role: one piece of content for visitors and another for registered members.
  • Days and dates: a range or specific days; the promotion hides itself when it ends.
  • URL with wildcard: enter the address and use * to cover whole sections. It is the simplest route if you do not want PHP logic.
  • PHP logic: your own conditions, already built in, without installing another widget logic plugin.

It helps to be clear about the limits. PHP logic requires knowing how to write conditions; if that is not you, stick with the checkboxes and URLs. The plugin does not create content or design the sidebar: it extends the widgets and blocks you already have. And since rules are set widget by widget, a site with many widgets will need reviewing them one by one.

Style, animation and position without touching the theme

Beyond visibility, you can give a widget its own style so the newsletter stands out, align its content differently on each device and add a custom ID or classes without code. You can also hide the title with a checkbox, animate the widget on page load or when it enters the screen, and keep it fixed while the visitor scrolls. A widget can also link to an internal page or any URL, opening in a new tab and with a nofollow attribute.

Other tools change how you work: assigning widgets as columns using a single sidebar, duplicating a widget and assigning it to another area, moving it between areas without dragging and showing any widget or sidebar on pages, posts or products using shortcodes.

Does it work with blocks, classic widgets and page builders?

Blocks or classic widgets?

Both. The options apply to classic widgets and Gutenberg blocks, and there is a built-in option to return to the classic widgets screen without another plugin.

Is it useful on a site built with Elementor?

It is designed for sites with Elementor or SiteOrigin, but the rules apply to WordPress widgets; they do not replace the builder's own visibility settings.

Can I place a widget inside a page?

Yes, with shortcodes: the same widget or the same sidebar can be reused wherever you want.

Does it affect speed?

It includes a cache for widget output, which you can apply to all widgets or with exceptions.

Backups, import and filter: the widgets screen stops being fragile

You can export and import widgets to migrate to another installation, and create JSON backups of a specific sidebar area, which can later be imported again. A live search filter helps you find widgets and areas when the list grows. It is what you will appreciate most before touching a sidebar that already works.

Test the rules widget by widget and while logged out

Start with a single widget and a simple rule, and check it as a visitor, not as an administrator: that is where you really see what gets hidden. Then test mobile and tablet, and one page of each content type you included or excluded. If you turn on the widget cache, check that the role and date rules still behave as you expect. And if a URL wildcard rule gives you trouble, PHP logic remains as a last resort.
