About GeoDirectory Custom Map Styles

A map in Google's colors inside a directory with its own identity

In a directory, the map is not decoration: it is the screen where the visitor decides which listing to open. It is also usually the one part of the page nobody designed, because it arrives with the generic look of Google or OpenStreetMap, in a palette that has nothing to do with your brand. The clash is more noticeable than on other sites because the map takes up a good part of the screen.

GeoDirectory Custom Map Styles is an add-on for the GeoDirectory plugin that changes the appearance of the maps so they fit the rest of the site. It works on the visual look: it does not add search or listing features.

Google Maps: per-layer styles and different styles by map type

If your directory uses Google Maps, the add-on lets you work on the map in quite some detail:

  • Individual layers: you can style roads, water, parks, railways and other map elements separately.
  • Styles by map type: for example, the single listing map can look different from the category maps.
  • Style parameters: hex color, hue, gamma, saturation, lightness, weight and more.
  • Import from Snazzy Maps: you can bring in ready-made styles, use them as they are or take them as a starting point to tweak.

GeoDirectory Custom Map Styles with OpenStreetMap: preset styles and layers through an API

If you prefer OpenStreetMap, the approach changes a little: instead of editing layer by layer, you choose from a wide range of preset styles that come close to your site or your brand. Here too you can assign a different style to each map type.

There is also a field to enter an API key and use paid map layers, such as Open Cycle Map or others. It is useful if your directory is about routes, cycling or outdoor activities and you need specific cartography, but those layers depend on the provider you choose.

Decide if it is worth it: static maps, requirements and common questions

Styles work with all GeoDirectory maps, except Google static maps, which do not support styles. It is an add-on, so it needs the base GeoDirectory plugin installed and does not work on its own. If your directory already looks good with the default map, you probably do not need it.

Does it work with other GeoDirectory add-ons?

Yes, it is compatible with the other official add-ons, such as Marker Cluster.

Can I use a different style on the listing and on categories?

Yes, in both Google Maps and OpenStreetMap you can assign a different style to each map type.

Do I have to design the style from scratch?

No. In Google Maps you can import styles from Snazzy Maps and tweak them, and in OpenStreetMap you choose from preset styles.

Does it work for Google static maps?

No. Those maps do not support styles, so they will keep the standard Google look.
