About GeoDirectory Custom Post Types

For the directory that throws hotels, doctors and businesses into one bag

Putting hotels, clinics and restaurants in the same listing type ends badly: forms with fields that do not apply to half the listings, mixed-up categories and searches that mean nothing to the person looking. GeoDirectory Custom Post Types fixes this by adding content types of their own next to “Places”, the only one the base plugin includes.

It is for you if your directory brings together businesses of different natures and each one needs its own data. You do not need it if all your listings are of the same type: “Places” and its categories are enough. It is also an add-on: it does not work on its own and needs the GeoDirectory base plugin installed.

One form, its own categories and a menu for each type

Every type you create has its own form builder. There you define the custom fields, prices, categories and tags that belong to it. A “Hotels” type asks for what a hotel needs and a “Restaurants” type for something different, without carrying empty fields.

Each type also has its own sidebar menu and management system in the admin, just like “Places”. In practice, that means:

  • Categories kept separate by type, not mixed.
  • Fields and parameters of their own for each type.

Filters that make sense for each type: GeoDirectory Custom Post Types with advanced search

If you combine it with GeoDirectory's Advanced Search Filters add-on, which is a separate product, you can search by type and apply different filters to each one. A “Hotels” type could offer filters such as “Free WiFi” or “Pets Allowed”, which would make no sense in another kind of directory. Without that add-on you will not have type-specific filters.

Hospitals and doctors: linking one type to another

You can link one or several types together. A simple example: a “Hospital” type and a “Doctors” type. The hospital listing shows a tab with the doctors who work there, and the doctor listing links to the hospital where they practice.

Several types can also be linked at once. A website for fishermen could link each fisherman's profile to “Fishing boats”, “Companies” and even “References”, which would be other fishermen of the same type.

Directories of websites and online services, with no physical address

A type can be set up without a location. That lets you create listings that have no physical place and build, for example, a directory of websites or online services.

Questions before creating your second listing type

How many types can I create?

As many as you need. The base plugin only includes “Places”, and this add-on adds the rest.

Does it work without GeoDirectory?

No. It is an add-on for the base plugin and depends on it.

Will I get different filters for each type?

Yes, if you add Advanced Search Filters. With both together you can search by type and apply filters of their own to each one.

Can I link one type to several at once?

Yes. You can link a type to one or to several others, and even to itself, as in the case of fishermen who act as references for other fishermen.
