About GeoDirectory: Framework
A directory is not a blog with a different front page
Building a directory on a generic theme usually ends the same way: the post pages look fine, but the signup form, each business page and the listings look like something taped on afterwards. And every color or header tweak pushes you into code.
In a directory the design work is not on the home page, but on the pages where users act: signing up, adding a listing, reading a listing page. GeoDirectory Framework was made for the GeoDirectory plugin, so those pages look good from the start.
GeoDirectory Framework is a base, not a finished design
It works as a foundation on which to style the site. What it offers:
- Widget areas: enable or disable the ones you need, including the footer ones.
- Its own options pages: to style almost any area of the site without editing a line of code.
- WordPress Customizer compatibility: you change options and see a live preview.
- Responsive layout: both site menus switch to a mobile version on small screens.
Now, what you should be clear about. Although it can be used on its own, without the GeoDirectory plugin you have no directory. Do not expect a finished design to launch the site as is either: it is a starting point, styled with the options or with a child theme. And if you want to change the structure of a plugin page, the options are not enough: you will need to edit templates, with some HTML and PHP.
Four options pages to style the site without code
- Main: you choose a fluid or fixed width. The top section of the home page, which normally holds the map, is edited separately.
- Header: logo and its margins, title, tagline, background and gradient, menu font, menu and submenu colors and borders, button radius, and settings for the admin bar and for mobile.
- Body: site, content and sidebar backgrounds, button and link colors, and fonts for body text and for h1, h2 and h3 headings.
- Footer: background, gradient, text color, widget areas and copyright text.
Common questions before choosing GeoDirectory Framework
Does it work without the GeoDirectory plugin?
It can be used on its own, but it is designed to work with the plugin.
Do I need to know how to code?
Not for colors, fonts, widths, header and footer. To change the structure of the plugin templates, yes.
Can I choose between a fixed-width and a fluid site?
Yes, on the main options page.
Does it look good on mobile?
The layout is responsive and both menus switch to a mobile version on small screens. Still, check your real listings on a phone.
Templates are copied to the geodirectory folder of your child theme
If you go beyond the options, do not edit the plugin files: your changes would be lost. Copy the templates from the GeoDirectory plugin's templates folder into a folder named geodirectory inside your child theme and modify them there. Your own CSS goes in the child theme's style.css.
A sensible order: start with the options pages and the Customizer, leave templates for structural changes, and finally check the home page, listings, listing page, signup and add listing on a small screen.
