About Google Merchant Center Customer Reviews
An online store that sells well but has no visible ratings on Google competes with one hand tied: the buyer sees your ad, sees the one next to it with stars, and picks whichever feels safer. Asking for reviews by email, order by order, is something almost nobody does consistently.
What your store needs before you install anything
Google Merchant Center Customer Reviews is the bridge between WooCommerce and Google's Customer Reviews program. It doesn't work on its own: you need a Google Merchant Center account (free), verified and with your website claimed, and you must enable the reviews program from Settings, in the add-ons tab. After that, the plugin asks for your merchant ID and little else. No code needed.
From the checkout click to the seller rating, step by step
- Step 1, the thank-you page: right after payment, your customer sees a Google window asking permission to send a short survey about their shopping experience. If they accept, they see a confirmation.
- Step 2, the email: after delivery, Google (not you) writes to them asking them to rate the purchase.
- Step 3, the review: the customer rates and writes their opinion, and sees a confirmation page.
- Step 4, your dashboard: the answers feed your seller rating, which Google may show in search and Shopping ads, and you can track it in your Merchant Center account.
Note what this implies: you only get reviews from people who accept in that window. If your customer closes it, there is no survey. The plugin makes the request easier, but it doesn't force anyone to respond.
The badge on your site: where to put it
The plugin shows the Google badge in your store so visitors can see what other buyers think. If you want to place it somewhere specific, you can do it with a shortcode, a widget or the menus, and there are versions for light and dark backgrounds. With the shortcode you can also use it in the block editor.
The GTIN data
The plugin can take the GTIN of your products from custom fields, from the Google Product Feed plugin, or add its own GTIN field to your products. If you don't have those codes loaded, you'll need to fill them in first. One of the product's reviews says the GTIN didn't reach Google, so check this point with a test order.
Top Quality Store: the plugin doesn't give it to you
This is the most likely wrong expectation. Installing the plugin doesn't guarantee the Top Quality Store badge: only Google grants it, based on several quality signals. It looks at four areas: shipping, returns, browsing and purchase, with ratings from "Low" to "Exceptional". To earn it, your overall score must be "Exceptional", and you don't need to be so in every category. Reviews help, but if your delivery times or returns are poor, the badge won't come.
