Opening your inbox and finding a dozen form alerts with odd links among real customer messages is tiring, and worse when those alerts trigger automations that push fake data into your CRM or mailing list. Gravity Forms Akismet Addon exists for that: it checks every submission before anything else happens.
It suits anyone already working with Gravity Forms who suffers spam on contact, application or registration forms. It does not suit someone looking for a standalone form plugin: it is an add-on for Gravity Forms and does not work without it. Nor is it complete protection on its own: the maker itself recommends combining it with other methods.
What happens to a submission Akismet flags as spam
With the add-on active, every submission is checked against Akismet's global spam database. If it identifies one as spam, it is marked as such and two useful things happen:
- Notifications are not processed, so your inbox does not fill with fake alerts.
- The data does not reach other add-ons, so your CRM, mailing list or automations stay clean.
The practical advantage is that filtering works in the background, with nothing for you or the visitor to do.
Field mapping: the part that reduces false positives
Akismet decides better the better it understands what it receives. With field mapping you indicate which form field corresponds to each piece of data sent to the service. That way you avoid a form with many fields reaching Akismet as a confusing block.
This matters most in complex forms. A real customer flagged as spam is a lost sale or enquiry you never hear about, so it is worth spending a while setting up the mapping and testing it with real submissions.
Akismet is not enough when the spam comes from bots
Akismet compares content with known spam. To tackle the problem from another angle, Gravity Forms offers more tools, and the maker's recommendation is to use more than one method at once:
- Google reCAPTCHA, in v2 and v3.
- Cloudflare Turnstile, an alternative that verifies the user without puzzles.
- Honeypot, a hidden field that catches bots without bothering people.
- Conditional logic on the submit button, also mentioned as an anti-spam measure.
If you add a visible CAPTCHA, think about how much it gets in the way of the person filling in the form.
