About Gravity Forms Cloudflare Turnstile

Bots never tire of puzzles, your customers do

A contact or quote form is the door through which real enquiries come in, and it is also the door bots slip through. Whoever runs it ends up with two problems at once: an inbox full of junk to filter by hand and the temptation to add a CAPTCHA that makes people pick traffic lights just when they wanted to write to you. The bot is not frustrated by the puzzle, but a person with a question is, and they leave. A good anti-spam measure should bother the spammer, not the customer.

Gravity Forms Cloudflare Turnstile is the official add-on that brings that verification to your forms without asking anything of the visitor.

How Gravity Forms Cloudflare Turnstile decides who is human

The check happens in the background. Visitors don't tick boxes or solve images: Turnstile runs discreet browser challenges and combines them with behavioral signals to let people through and stop bots.

  • Invisible verification: confirms the visitor is real without puzzles or checkboxes.
  • Rotating challenges: automatically picks between several types based on telemetry and behavior.
  • Sin sin cookies: verifies without storing anything on the visitor's device.
  • No need to be a Cloudflare customer: it uses the same technology as Cloudflare's Managed Challenge, but you don't need to be a Cloudflare customer to use it on your forms.

For sites that take privacy seriously, the approach is clear: Turnstile does not collect visitor data for ad retargeting, something that does worry people with other CAPTCHA options.

Turnstile adds layers, it doesn't replace your other defenses

No single filter stops all spam. Gravity Forms offers several methods that can be combined, and Turnstile is one more:

  • Akismet: compares submissions against a global spam database and discards the malicious ones.
  • reCAPTCHA: compatible with Google's v2 and v3 versions.
  • Honeypot: a hidden field that catches bots without real users noticing.

Turnstile doesn't replace the other layers: a browser challenge does not read the content of the message, so spam written by people needs another layer, such as Akismet.

Switch from reCAPTCHA to Turnstile, or combine them?

If your complaint about reCAPTCHA is friction for visitors or privacy, switching makes sense. If you already get little spam and everything works, you probably won't gain much. Before deciding, keep these limits in mind:

  • It is a Gravity Forms add-on: it doesn't work on its own and needs that plugin installed.
  • It protects forms built with Gravity Forms, not other forms on your site.
  • It reduces spam but doesn't promise to eliminate it entirely, so it is best combined with other layers.

Do I need a Cloudflare account?

No. You don't need to be a Cloudflare customer to use it on your forms.

Will my visitors have to solve anything?

No. The verification is invisible and doesn't ask for puzzles or boxes.

Is it an alternative to Google reCAPTCHA?

Yes, it protects without visual puzzles, without cookies and without collecting data for advertising. Gravity Forms still supports reCAPTCHA v2 and v3 if you prefer to keep it.

Can I use it together with Akismet or the honeypot?

Yes, the methods can be combined for stronger protection.
