About Gravity Forms reCAPTCHA Addon

Spam is annoying, but losing a real lead hurts more

A contact or quote form ends up filling with bot messages, and the temptation is to add a puzzle of traffic lights and bicycles. It works against bots, but it also scares off the person who was about to write to you. And there is a risk almost nobody watches: the filter that flags a real customer as spam and sends them to a folder nobody checks.

Gravity Forms reCAPTCHA Addon adds Google reCAPTCHA v3 to your Gravity Forms forms. For anyone who lives off the leads that come in through the website, what matters is not just blocking: it is seeing what score each submission received and correcting the criteria when it gets it wrong.

Gravity Forms reCAPTCHA Addon scores every submission without showing any challenge

reCAPTCHA v3 gives each interaction a score: 1.0 is probably a person and 0.0 is probably a bot. Visitors see no checkbox or puzzle, because everything happens in the background while they fill in the form.

  • Your own threshold: you decide the score below which a submission is treated as spam. Anything under it goes straight to spam.
  • Score stored with the entry: each submission records its score, so you can review the flagged ones and raise or lower the threshold if you see false positives.
  • One form or all of them: you can protect only the form that gets the most junk or enable it on all of them.

Before buying, be clear about its limits. It is an add-on: it does not work without Gravity Forms. It only covers v3, so it offers no checkbox or visual challenge as a second barrier if a bot gets through. You need your own Google keys (the account is free). And the score is an estimate: no threshold removes all spam or guarantees zero false positives. Also, reCAPTCHA observes visitor activity on your site, so it is worth reflecting that in your privacy policy.

Checkbox, invisible, Akismet or honeypot: what the add-on covers and what you already had

If you prefer the classic "I'm not a robot" checkbox or the invisible version, you do not need this add-on: Gravity Forms includes reCAPTCHA v2 in both modes out of the box. You only need the add-on for v3.

reCAPTCHA is one of several anti-spam defenses in Gravity Forms, and they can be combined:

  • Akismet: compares submissions against a global spam database.
  • Honeypot: a hidden field that catches bots without affecting people.
  • Cloudflare Turnstile: a CAPTCHA alternative that is friendlier to privacy and asks for no puzzles.

Combining methods makes sense if your form gets a lot of noise.

Common questions before installing it

Will visitors see any challenge?

No. reCAPTCHA v3 works without checkboxes or images, so the form is filled in and sent as usual.

Can I use v2 with this add-on?

You do not need to: v2 (checkbox and invisible) is already built into Gravity Forms, no add-on required.

What happens to a low-scoring submission?

If it falls below the threshold you set, it is marked as spam. Since the score is stored with the entry, you can check why it was filtered.

Do I have to enable it on every form?

No. You can protect all of them or only the ones that need it.

Create your Google keys before touching the form

Setup follows a logical order. First, a free Google reCAPTCHA account and v3 keys. Then connect those keys in the add-on settings and, finally, enable the protection on each form.

Once it is active, send a test submission yourself and look at the score stored in the entry. If you browse with a VPN or an unusual browser and get a low score, make a note of it: it is a good hint not to set the threshold too strict and end up filtering real people.
