About Gravity Forms SMTP

When the form works and the email never arrives

Someone fills in your form, sees the "sent" message, and you receive nothing. Or worse: your reply ends up in the customer's spam folder. By default WordPress sends mail with the PHP mail function. Gravity Forms SMTP replaces that sending method with dedicated email providers.

The uncomfortable thing about a failed email is that it makes no noise. No error appears: just a customer waiting for an answer who concludes you are ignoring them. Anyone who relies on forms to capture leads or orders loses those sales without knowing they ever existed.

Gravity Forms SMTP: connect a provider and switch it whenever you need

You enter your provider's details and the plugin sends WordPress emails through it. It supports SendGrid and Postmark directly, and other SMTP or API-based services through the custom SMTP option.

Once connected, you can turn each service on or off and keep the one that best fits your sending volume.

A test email before you trust the configuration

After connecting the provider, you can send a test email to the address of your choice. It is the quickest way to find out whether the settings are right before a real customer finds out for you. It is worth repeating each time you change service.

The sending log: what went out, when and to whom

The email log stores each message with its status, the date and time, and the sender and recipient addresses. When a customer says they never received their confirmation, you no longer argue from memory: you check whether it went out, when, and to which address.

Only SendGrid and Postmark out of the box, and still in alpha

This plugin is at an early (alpha) stage and the maker does not recommend it for production sites: install it in a testing environment. Here is what it already covers and what is up to you:

  • Already solved: sending through SendGrid or Postmark
  • Already solved: connection with other SMTP or API services through custom SMTP
  • Already solved: test email to validate the configuration
  • Already solved: log with status, date, time, sender and recipient
  • You cover it: the account with the email provider, which is separate from the plugin
  • You cover it: any other provider, which for now goes through custom SMTP
  • You cover it: testing on a separate site before moving to a website with real traffic

Frequently asked questions about Gravity Forms SMTP

Can I already use it on my live site?

It is not advisable. Since it is in alpha, the sensible approach is to test it in a testing environment and keep your current sending system on the live site.

Which providers does it support?

SendGrid and Postmark directly, and any other SMTP or API-based service through the custom SMTP option.

Is it only for Gravity Forms emails?

It is designed for WordPress emails in general, not only those from forms.

Does it replace an email marketing tool?

No. It lets the emails your site sends go out through a reliable provider and lets you track them. For campaigns or subscriber lists you need another tool.
