About Gravity Perks Advanced Select

A list of 300 options is not scrolled, it is searched

A native drop down full of countries, products or companies makes people scroll with the mouse wheel until they find the right option. On mobile it is worse, and if the list comes from a database, every page view loads all the options even if nobody opens the field. Gravity Perks Advanced Select tackles both problems: how people choose and when the options load.

It is switched on per field by ticking Enable Advanced Select in the Perks tab of the settings of a Drop Down, a Multi Select or an Address field (all address types).

Gravity Perks Advanced Select: search, pick several and delete without a mouse

What the person filling in the form sees changes quite a lot:

  • Search inside the field: type and the list filters. Handy for a company selector, a skills selector, countries or states.
  • Comfortable multiple selection: in a Multi Select you pick several items with CMD + click or SHIFT + click, and remove them with the X or with the Backspace and Delete keys. By default the remove icon only appears in Multi Select; to see it in Drop Down too you need a code filter.
  • Accessibility: the field is fully keyboard navigable (focusing, filtering, moving through options and removing selected ones), works with screen readers and is compatible with the Gravity Forms Theme Framework.
  • Mobile: it is built to work on all types of devices.

Huge lists without loading the whole page

This is what justifies installing it if your options come from external data. Gravity Forms loads all the options when the form renders; with many dynamically populated fields, that burdens the server with options that may never be seen (for example, fields hidden by conditional logic).

  • Lazy loading: dynamic options are requested only when the person interacts with the field.
  • Filter by search value: instead of raising the Populate Anything query limit, which is 500 results and hurts performance, each search runs a new query and returns only the matches.
  • Infinite scroll: with that filter active, 50 results are returned and, as the user nears the end, the next 50 load until the list is exhausted.
  • Images in the options: it integrates with JetSloth's Image Choices, and with Populate Anything you can assign an image URL to each dynamic option.

Is Advanced Select enough on its own, or do you also need Populate Anything?

That is the decision. Lazy loading, filtering by search and infinite scroll depend on Populate Anything: the lazy load option does not even appear if the options are not populated with it. Images also need the Image Choices plugin by JetSloth. If your lists are 15 hand-typed options, you will only notice the added comfort; if they come from thousands of records, you need both.

How many letters must be typed to search?

When options are filtered by search value, the person must type at least 3 characters to trigger the query. There is a snippet to adjust that minimum length.

Can the user add an option that does not exist?

It is not a settings screen option: it is done with a code snippet, like the clear button or custom option labels.

Does it work on date and time fields?

Only with a snippet that enables it. By default it acts on Drop Down, Multi Select and Address fields.
