About Gravity Perks Pay Per Word

For people who sell text by length, not for those with a fixed-price service

Charging per word sounds simple until you have to do it in a form: the customer writes their ad, you work out the amount by hand, send a quote, and half of them vanish along the way. Gravity Perks Pay Per Word suits anyone who already sells text measured in words: classified ads, social media posts, proofreading, translations or document drafts. If your service has a fixed price, or what you charge depends on hours rather than length, this plugin adds nothing for you.

It also has requirements: it is an add-on for Gravity Perks, so you need Gravity Forms and Gravity Perks installed. It does not work on its own.

The total goes up while the customer types

The core feature is a live calculation. You add a single product field, enable Pay Per Word in the Perks tab, choose which text field gets counted and set the price per word. As the person types, the total updates. They see exactly what they will pay before submitting, which reduces surprises and later arguments.

It works with the Paragraph and Post Body fields, and supports any textarea field in Gravity Forms.

A minimum fee with words included

Many text businesses do not charge from the first word, because a very short order is not worth it. With the base price you set an initial amount and how many words it covers. For example, an entry fee that includes the first words and, from there, a charge for each additional word. That way you protect your margin on small orders.

Word limits with Gravity Forms Word Count

If you also want a minimum and a maximum number of words, the plugin integrates with Gravity Forms Word Count. That integration requires Word Count to be available, because Pay Per Word alone does not limit how many words can be written.

Charging per character or per line takes code

Here it pays to be clear about expectations. The plugin counts words. There are code snippets to charge per character, per line, round the price up or split words on specific characters, but you have to paste them yourself. To charge per character you need two parts: one in PHP, which goes in the theme's functions.php file, and another in JavaScript, which is added to the form with another plugin from the same brand. If you are not comfortable with code or have nobody to do it for you, stick with charging per word as it comes.

Since the live calculation depends on JavaScript, a conflict with the theme or another plugin can break it. If that happens, a conflict test is needed. If you see an amount mismatch error, check that all product fields and their choices have a price, even if it is zero.
