About Gravity Perks Randomizer
The order of your answers is already influencing what people reply
You build a quiz, a survey or a questionnaire and assume the responses reflect what each person thinks or knows. But the order in which options appear also carries weight: it is called order bias, the tendency to answer inaccurately because of where an answer sits.
Gravity Perks Randomizer is an add-on for Gravity Forms that shuffles the choices of a field and also the questions of the form, so each visitor gets a different order.
A practice test that feels new every time: building it with Randomizer
Picture a practice test that people can retake. The walkthrough would be this:
- Shuffle the answers. In any field with choices (drop down, multi select, radio buttons, checkboxes, products, options) you tick "Randomize Choice Order" in the field settings. Each visitor will see the choices in a different order.
- Turn on question shuffling. On the "Randomizer" page under settings you enable the field randomizer and choose which fields go into the pool: all of them, all except some, or only the ones you select.
- Protect what must stay put. Fields outside the pool are treated as static: they always display and never move.
- Show only some of the questions. You set how many fields from the pool are displayed on each load. With a large bank of questions you can show only a part on each attempt, so anyone retaking the test will not see the same thing.
- Let the pages adjust. Pool fields that are not drawn are not displayed. If a page or section is left with no visible fields, it is removed and the pages are restructured automatically.
That covers dynamic quizzes, retakable tests, surveys with random question order and feedback forms that rotate their questions.
What happens when someone makes a mistake or goes back a page
The most annoying thing about a randomized form is choices jumping around after a submission error. Randomizer keeps the order once the person has started filling in the form: it holds after a validation error and when moving forward or back in multi-page forms. Field order and drawn fields are also restored when returning through Save and Continue, including the GF Advanced Save & Continue perk.
A few details worth knowing:
- In radio buttons with an "Other" option, that option always stays last.
- If you use Populate Anything, dynamically populated choices are also shuffled and keep their order like regular fields. That requires having that perk separately.
- Choice shuffling works with cached pages. If you cache the form and shuffle fields, check in a private window that each load shows a different order.
- The shuffles are not preserved when entry data is passed through with Easy Passthrough.
- It requires Gravity Forms; it does not work on its own.
Common questions before using Randomizer
Can I shuffle only some questions and keep others fixed?
Yes. You choose the pool with "all fields", "all fields except" or "specific fields". Anything outside the pool does not change position.
Can I show only part of the questions?
Yes. You define how many fields from the pool appear and the rest are hidden on that load.
Does it also shuffle the choices of a field with dynamic data?
Yes, if you work with Populate Anything: the order is saved and reused as in a static field.
Will the order change if the visitor reloads after an error?
No: once the form has been started, the order holds after validation errors and when changing pages.
