About GravityView A-Z Filters Extension
Nobody remembers the full name, but they remember the initial
A member directory, a staff list or a resource library grows until scrolling the page no longer works. People looking for something usually remember the letter it starts with, not the full spelling, so a search box sometimes fails and an endless list is tiring. GravityView A-Z Filters Extension adds a bar of links from A to Z to your GravityView Views: one click on a letter and only the entries starting with it remain.
A company directory, from the A-Z bar to the result
Imagine a directory of member companies built with Gravity Forms and displayed with GravityView. Here is how the case plays out:
- First, you choose which field is indexed. It can be the name, the company, the product or another field in your form. This is the decision that matters: the filter works with the first letter of the chosen field, so think about which piece of data should order the list before you configure it.
- Second, you adjust the alphabet. The extension filters according to language and supports the main alphabets, so a non-English audience is not left with a bar that does not suit them. If your entries mix languages, check in the demo how it responds with data similar to yours.
- Third, you place the bar in your layout. It can be added to any GravityView design, with no code, and it is a pattern visitors already know, on mobile too.
- Fourth, you combine it with search. Alongside the Search Bar, visitors can click a letter and then refine with a keyword. That serves both those who know what they want and those who just want to browse.
Notice what it does not do: it does not create the list or collect the data. It is only the navigation layer over a View you already have, and it filters by the initial, not by any part of the text.
Questions before installing GravityView A-Z Filters Extension
Does it work without GravityView?
No. It is a GravityView extension, and GravityView displays Gravity Forms entries, so you need both running and with entries to show.
Do I need to know how to code?
Not for normal use: it is set up without code. If you want to customize it further, it is designed so a developer can extend it.
Is it suitable for large lists?
Yes, that is exactly its case: with many entries, a letter narrows the list to a manageable section. If your list has twenty rows, the bar is unnecessary.
Can I filter by any field?
You choose the field the bar is indexed by, such as a name, a company or a product. Only one is used at a time for the bar, and what counts is its first letter.
Who it makes sense for and when it gets in the way
It fits member directories, team pages, supplier catalogs and document libraries where visitors think alphabetically. It cuts down scrolling and stops people from giving up halfway down the page.
It will not help if people search by category, location or date: there you need other kinds of filters. Nor does it replace full-text search; it is a complementary shortcut. If your list is ordered by a value that almost everyone starts the same way (for example, a shared prefix), the bar will show almost everything under the same letter and lose its usefulness.
