About GravityView - Ratings & Reviews

A directory without opinions is a phone book

Building a listing with Gravity Forms and GravityView solves how the data is displayed, but it does not help visitors decide. They see a pile of similar entries, do not know which one to open first, and end up leaving or writing to you to ask what other people could already have told them.

What directory owners often miss is that what sets one entry apart from another cannot be written by them: if the owner writes it, it sounds like advertising; if another visitor writes it, it is judgment. GravityView - Ratings & Reviews lets that judgment live inside each entry, with no custom development. It fits directories, event listings and community listings, and even Yelp-style projects or discussion boards.

Stars or up and down votes, and what it needs to work

It is an extension: it adds the social layer to the Views you already build with GravityView. Visitors can rate, review and comment on your form entries from the frontend. What it adds, specifically:

  • Two ways to rate: stars or up and down voting.
  • Reviews tied to each entry: the opinion is attached to a specific record, not to the page in general.
  • Two levels of detail: the rating can appear in the list view so people see at a glance what stands out, and full reviews on the single entry page, so the listing does not fill up with text.

Now, the limits. It does not work alone: it needs Gravity Forms and GravityView, because it relies on their entries and Views. It does not create the directory or the forms either. And if spam or uncontrolled reviews worry you, check in the demo how ratings are handled before opening them to the public.

Stars or thumbs? Common questions before you decide

Do I need Gravity Forms and GravityView?

Yes. The extension works on Gravity Forms entries displayed with GravityView; without them it has nothing to work on.

Can I use votes instead of stars?

Yes, both stars and up and down voting are offered.

Where are the ratings displayed?

You can show the rating in the list and the full reviews on the single entry, or place the rating wherever suits within the layout.

Is it good for a store?

It is designed for form entries: directories, events and community listings. It is not a product review system for online stores.

Set up the list and the single entry separately

The decision that most affects the result is what the visitor sees at each level. In the list, a quick signal is what helps: stars or votes. On the single entry, there is room for the full review. Plan it that way from the start and you will avoid cluttered listings.

  • Have Gravity Forms and GravityView active, and a list View with its single entry view already built.
  • Decide whether you want stars or votes before opening participation.
  • Test in the demo how it looks and how a visitor takes part, and check that the flow fits your type of directory.
