About Inline Related Posts
Everything you ask for at the end of a post competes with everything else
A reader finishes a post and finds the author box, the newsletter signup, the share buttons, the comments and, somewhere in that line, the related posts. That is five requests in a row in the same stretch of the page, aimed at someone who already has what they came for.
If your site lives on page views, on advertising or on people reading on, the problem is one of position: a related link in the footer is only seen by those who reach the footer. Whoever leaves halfway through never knows it was there, and whoever arrives gets it alongside everything else.
Inline Related Posts moves that request into the body of the article. It places related post boxes inside the content, between paragraphs, and can insert them automatically in all your posts. Readers come across them while reading, with no need to reach the bottom.
Boxes inside the text, automatic or placed by hand
- Boxes inside the content, rather than at the end of the article.
- Automatic insertion of multiple boxes in all posts, which saves going article by article in a large archive.
- Line break detection, so paragraphs and headlines are not split.
- Over 20 style combinations across themes, colors and hover effect.
- A shortcode to put a box at the exact point you choose, with filters by posts, categories or tags.
Choosing the destination yourself with the irp shortcode
Automatic insertion covers the whole archive. In the articles that matter most you may prefer to decide where the reader is sent, and that is what these four forms of the shortcode are for:
[irp]places a box right where you type it.[irp posts="183,179,191,195"]shows a box with a link to a random post from that list.[irp cats="3"]targets only posts from the given categories, comma separated if there are several.[irp tags="18"]does the same with tags.
The list option is useful when you have several pieces to push at once, such as a guide, a comparison and a sales article: you enter their IDs and each box links to one of them at random.
What a box in the middle of the text does not solve
It does not replace internal linking in your writing. The box is a separate block pointing to another post. Its features do not include turning words in your paragraphs into links, or finding pages with no inbound links.
It does not measure results. Its features do not include click reports, so to find out whether the boxes send people to other posts you need your analytics tool.
It interrupts. Each box lands in the middle of what the person is reading. Several boxes in a short article can annoy more than they add, and in a text that sells something they can pull the reader away just before the decision.
Installing the plugin and setting up the first boxes
It needs WordPress 3.6 or higher and PHP 5.6 or higher. These are the steps to get started:
- Upload the plugin to the WordPress plugins folder and activate it from the Plugins menu.
- Once activated, it takes you to Settings, Inline Related Posts.
- Pick a combination of theme, color and effect that fits your site design.
- Open three long articles on your phone and check where the boxes land before calling the job done.
Other ways to spread internal links in the catalog
If what you want is to link from the text itself, Link Whisper Pro suggests links as you write and finds orphan pages so you can link them from older articles, with reports to add them from.
To automate it by keyword, Internal Link Juicer lets you define terms for each piece of content and creates the links across the site. Both work inside sentences, and they can complement a box that works between paragraphs.
Questions about boxes in the middle of the article
Can it break the structure of my posts?
It detects line breaks and takes HTML tags into account so it does not split paragraphs or headlines.
Can I use it alongside another related posts plugin?
Yes. Its boxes go inside the content, not at the end, so they can coexist with a footer block.
Do I have to edit my old articles?
For automatic insertion, no: it acts on all posts. Only the shortcode requires opening the article.
