About JetFormBuilder Hierarchical Select Addon
When your form asks people to pick from hundreds of categories
A dropdown with a hundred mixed categories invites mistakes: the user picks "Jeans" without knowing whether it is men's or women's, or types the brand where the model should go. When the data you collect already lives in a taxonomy with levels, the form should respect it. JetFormBuilder Hierarchical Select Addon adds a block that shows those levels as cascading dropdown lists: you choose the first one and the next one offers only what hangs from that choice.
It fits best in forms that create or edit posts: car listings (make, model), product records with paths like Men > Collection > Jeans, or job applications where the candidate picks company type, position and vacancy type.
How JetFormBuilder Hierarchical Select Addon controls what the user sees
Each level is configured separately from the level editing button: internal name (it cannot be repeated anywhere in the form), label, placeholder text and description. You can add as many levels as you need.
The most useful choice is what happens with the levels the user has not reached yet:
- Show all: the whole hierarchy is visible from the start.
- Hide the children until the previous level is chosen.
- Disable the children: they are visible but cannot be used until their turn.
You also choose which value is saved from each term: its ID, name, slug or a meta field.
Creating new terms and calculating prices from the form
With manual input enabled, if the chosen term has no children, that level turns into a text field. What is typed is added as a new term in the taxonomy, respecting the hierarchy. This works from the second level and requires the insert or update post action, with the field mapped to the terms of that taxonomy.
To edit existing posts, you need to set the preset value as the post term. If the post has several branches, the form shows only one.
If your form calculates amounts, each term can provide a numeric value from its meta. In the calculated field you use one macro per level and they are added up. The classic example: a coupon term with a value of 10 and a discount term with a value of 40 give 50%. Note: with this option on, you cannot use manual input for new terms.
Is JetFormBuilder Hierarchical Select Addon right for you? What to know before deciding
It is an add-on, not a standalone plugin: it needs JetFormBuilder and is installed from its addons panel. It only works with hierarchical taxonomies, so tags are out. If your data is a flat list, a regular select is enough.
For developers, there are three PHP hooks that let you change the list of taxonomies, the term query parameters and the processing of the received terms.
Can I use tags as the source?
No. Only hierarchical taxonomies, such as categories, can be chosen.
Can users create new categories?
Yes, with manual input, from the second level and when the previous term has no children. You must configure the insert or update post action.
Can I save the terms to the post?
Yes: choose term ID as the value and mark which levels are saved in the insert or update post action.
Does it work with any theme?
Yes, it is a form block and does not depend on the theme.
Does the block need a name?
Yes. The label can be empty, but the field name must be filled in and unique, or it will not work.
