About LearnDash LMS Notifications Addon

The student who drops out does not tell you: they simply stop logging in

Whoever sells online courses hears about complaints, refunds and questions. They never hear about drop outs, because drop outs make no noise. The student buys with enthusiasm, completes two lessons, has a busy week and does not come back. Nobody writes to them, and when the course expires they do not even remember they had it.

The most valuable email in an academy is not the welcome one, but the one that goes out when nothing happens. LearnDash Notifications is the LearnDash add-on that sends automatic emails based on what the student does, and also on what they stop doing.

Eighteen course moments that can send an email

  • Enrolment in a course or a group.
  • Progress: completing a course, a lesson or a topic, and a scheduled lesson becoming available.
  • Quizzes: submitting, completing, passing or failing one, plus essay questions being submitted and graded.
  • Assignments: when one is uploaded and when it is approved.
  • Inactivity and expiry: the student has not logged in for X days, X days remain before the course expires, or it expired X days ago.
  • Grades added manually to the gradebook, only if the Gradebook add-on is installed.

The course, lesson, topic and quiz ones apply to all of them or to a specific one.

Student, group leader or administrator, and how many days later

Each notification can go to the student, their group leaders, all administrators and additional addresses. Careful with the last ones: they only receive the email if at least one of the first three is also selected.

Sending can be delayed a number of days after the trigger, and you can add conditions that must all be met at the same time. Inside the message, shortcodes insert the student's name, the course title or its link.

Three emails that are usually missing

  • The rescue one: seven days without logging in, with a direct link to the course.
  • The expiry warning: a few days before access ends, while they can still finish.
  • The failed quiz one: a message right after the failed attempt, telling them what to review before trying again.

Cron, mandatory unsubscribe and triggers that cannot be edited

It depends on cron. Scheduled notifications that miss their time go out on the next run, so on a low traffic site a real server cron is advisable. An email delivery service is also recommended, because hosting is not designed to send a lot of email.

Every email includes an unsubscribe link and it cannot be removed. Do not use it as the only channel for something the student must receive no matter what.

The trigger cannot be changed after publishing: the text and recipients can, but changing the trigger means creating a new notification. And manually marking a step as complete from the student's profile does not fire anything.

Cron first, then the inactivity notification

It is an add-on: it needs LearnDash installed.

  1. Set up a real cron and a delivery service before the first notification.
  2. Create the inactivity and expiry notifications first.
  3. Send each notification to a test account before opening it to students.
  4. If something does not arrive, check the Status menu, which shows the cron, the queue and the last run.

When student progress has to reach another system

If what you need is for the student's progress to do more than send an email, such as tagging them in your mailing list or notifying another system, Uncanny Automator Pro and AutomatorWP Pro build automations with LearnDash triggers and actions in Mailchimp and other services. And the foundation of it all is LearnDash.

Inactivity, expiry, unsubscribes and delays

Can I write to someone who has not logged in for days?

Yes, there is a trigger for a student who has not logged in for X days.

Can it warn before a course expires?

Yes, X days before and also X days after expiry.

Can it write to the teacher or the group leader?

Yes, to group leaders, administrators and additional addresses.

Can the unsubscribe link be removed?

No, every email includes it.

Why does a scheduled notification arrive late?

Because it goes out with the next cron run. A real server cron fixes it.

Can I change the trigger of a published notification?

No. You have to create a new notification with the right trigger.
