About LoginPress Login Logout Menu

Logging in interrupts what the person was doing

Someone is reading a page on your site, decides to sign in and clicks the menu link. If they land somewhere else after identifying themselves, they have to go looking for what they had open. And if the menu keeps offering "Log In" after they are in, they cannot tell whether the session has started.

Logging in is a step in the middle of another task, so the best thing a menu can do is return the person to where they were. Login Logout Menu tackles both problems: items change with the visitor's status, and each link can redirect wherever you decide, including the page being viewed.

It is a LoginPress add-on and is switched on inside that plugin. It does not create a new account system: it adds to the WordPress menu the links for moving around it.

Six items that appear depending on who is looking

They are added to the menu like any other item. Each one is shown to a different audience:

  • Log In: visible to anyone not logged in.
  • Log Out: visible to anyone already in.
  • Log In | Log Out: a single item that changes with the user's status.
  • Register: visible to anyone not logged in.
  • Profile: visible when logged in, for viewing and managing account details.
  • User: visible when logged in.

The look takes predefined templates or your own design, with colors, fonts and styles, and the menu is meant for desktop, tablet and mobile.

The redirect is written into the link itself

There is no separate setting to hunt for. You just add a relative path after the link's keyword, and it applies after login, logout or registration:

  • To a fixed page: #loginpress-loginlogout#hello-world goes to that address.
  • To the current page: #loginpress-loginlogout#%current-page% returns the person to where they were.

The second form is what solves the interruption described above. Check it with a test account, especially if your site caches pages.

What stays outside the menu

This add-on handles links, not the form: the design of the login screen belongs to LoginPress. Login security is not among its features either; the same family covers it with other add-ons.

Visibility depends on one condition, whether a session is active or not. Among its features there are no rules by user role.

It also relies on classic WordPress menus. If Appearance shows no Menus option, the active theme will not work for this method, and you need to switch to a compatible one, such as Twenty Twenty or Twenty Twenty-One.

Switching on the add-on and saving the menu

You need LoginPress installed and active, and a theme with the Menus option. After that, the process is short:

  1. In LoginPress, open Add-Ons and switch on Login Logout Menu.
  2. Go to Appearance and then Menus.
  3. Create a menu or open an existing one.
  4. Tick the items you want to show in the list and add them.
  5. Add the redirect to the links that need it.
  6. Save the menu and test it logged in and logged out.

What surrounds login in the catalog

LoginPress Pro is the paid version of the base plugin, devoted to customizing the login, registration and password recovery forms. From the same family come Social Login and Limit Login Attempts. If you would rather have users sign in without a password, Magic Login Pro emails them an access link.

The name, code and links outside the menu

Is it the same as the Login Logout Menu plugin on WordPress.org?

No. They share a name and a maker, but that one is a standalone plugin. This add-on is switched on inside LoginPress.

Do I need to know how to code?

Not for the menu. The redirect only requires adding a path to the link.

Can I place these links outside the menu?

Yes. There are login, logout, profile, registration, username and password reset links for showing on the site's pages.

Can I remove an item later?

Yes. Open its dropdown in the menu, choose Remove and save.
