Maggz: the homepage matters less than you think
An online magazine that publishes daily ends up with a homepage that must be rearranged by hand, articles lost between pages and entries with the same format for a video as for a quote. Maggz is a viral magazine and blog theme built for that pace: it brings homepage layouts, post templates and shortcodes made for editorial publications.
Walking through Maggz: from demo to a magazine with video and galleries
Imagine you are building a news magazine with lots of images and video. This is how you work through the theme:
- Import a demo: the demo content imports with one click and there are 9 distinct homepages. Pick the one closest to your idea and adapt it. The demo images cannot be used on your website: replace them with your own or with licensed photos.
- Build the homepage: there are 4 types of post blocks, 11 post layouts, a masonry layout, 4 carousels, 2 video blocks and 6 video layouts. They are placed with WPBakery Page Builder, which is included. Note: that is the builder, not the block editor, so if you only work with Gutenberg you will have to learn it.
- Define each post: it supports the standard, gallery, link, quote, video, audio and image formats, with several single post designs and related posts at the end.
- Organize the lists: standard, masonry and split blog templates. Pagination can be classic, with a load more button or with infinite scroll.
- Header and menu: six header types, a customizable mega menu, a full screen menu and separate logos for the normal, sticky and mobile header.
Questions before choosing Maggz
Do I need to know how to code?
No. The theme options are adjusted from its panel and the demos import with one click. If you want to touch code, it is ready for a child theme.
Does it work for a multilingual website?
It is translation ready and compatible with WPML.
Can I sell with it?
It is compatible with WooCommerce, but its structure revolves around articles, videos and lists. If a store is your main business, look for a theme designed for that.
What about contact forms?
It works with Contact Form 7, which is a separate plugin that you install yourself.
No built-in Twitter or Instagram feeds
If you expect to show your social networks inside the theme, keep in mind that the Twitter and Instagram feed plugins were removed from the package because of API changes on those platforms. You do get widgets for latest news, prominent posts and social icons.
It also includes Slider Revolution for homepage sliders, an integrated search, more than 800 Google Fonts and several icon packs. It is a theme for those who live off publishing content frequently and want to organize it without writing code.
