About Master-Detail Tables for wpDataTables

Tables with many columns that break your page

When a table has many columns, the usual thing happens on the web: either it overflows and throws off the layout, or you cut columns and the information is lost. Master-Detail Tables for wpDataTables solves exactly that dilemma: you hide the less important columns in the visible table and give your visitors a way to see every detail of a row with one click.

Separating quick reading from in-depth consultation lets you delete nothing.

How row details work in Master-Detail Tables

When you activate the add-on, a tab called Master-Detail Settings appears in the table configuration, where you enable the Master-Detail option. From there you choose:

  • How the details open: with a click on the row or with a button. The access differs slightly between editable and non-editable tables.
  • Which columns appear in the details: the ones you hid and also columns that remain visible in the table, if you want to repeat them.
  • How it is presented: in a non-tabular view or in a special tabular view.
  • Where it is shown: you can also show the details in a post or page that serves as a template.

Hiding is not deleting

The useful thing about this approach is that the data stays in the table. You hide columns visually and the visitor gets them back when needed.

One table to look at and another to decide

Think about which columns help compare rows with each other (leave them visible) and which only matter once someone is interested in a specific row (move them to the details).

It needs the full wpDataTables, not the Lite version

It is an add-on: it does not work on its own. It requires the full version of wpDataTables (from 2.8 onward); it does not work with earlier versions or with wpDataTables Lite. Here is what it covers and what is up to you:

  • Already solved: showing a row's details with a click or button, choosing which columns appear in them, tabular or non-tabular view, and options to send row data between related tables (parent and child).
  • You provide: the base table with its columns, created with the wpDataTables wizard.
  • You provide: the template page or post if you want to show the details on a page, and its design.
  • You decide: which columns to hide and which to show in the details.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work with wpDataTables Lite?

No. It needs the full version of wpDataTables, from 2.8 onward.

Do I lose data if I hide columns?

No. Columns are hidden visually in the table and their data can be shown in the details.

Can I show columns in the details that are already visible in the table?

Yes. You can choose hidden columns, visible ones or a mix.

Does it work for editable tables?

Yes, with a small difference in how the details are accessed compared to non-editable ones. Try it in the demo with the type of table you plan to use.
