About MemberPress Pro (Core Plugin)

If everything is open on day one, you sell a month, not a subscription

Whoever sets up a membership tends to publish everything at once: the courses, the templates, the whole archive. It looks generous, and it has an effect you notice on the second charge: the member joins, downloads what they wanted and cancels before renewing.

A subscription is sustained by what has not arrived yet, not by what is already there. What makes someone pay for the third month is that something new is waiting, or that their access depends on staying in.

MemberPress Pro is built for exactly that: rules that decide who sees what, content released by date and access that expires, alongside recurring billing.

The pieces of MemberPress Pro

  • Access rules for pages, child pages, posts, custom post types, categories and tags.
  • Drip content: posts released over time and access that expires.
  • Subscriptions with automated billing, plus sign-ups and plan upgrades from your own site.
  • Gateways: Stripe, PayPal, Square and Authorize.net, offline payments and the option to add your own gateway.
  • Coupons without limit, with expiry and a number of uses.
  • Taxes calculated, VAT included, with a TaxJar integration.
  • Pages with ReadyLaunch and connections to ActiveCampaign, Drip, Constant Contact, Mailchimp, Zapier and a REST API.

How to drip content without it looking hidden

The basics, open from sign-up. Members need to be able to start on day one. What gets dripped is what comes next, not what is essential.

A visible schedule. If members do not know something new is coming, dripping reads as something being kept from them. Say on the sales page what is released and when.

Expiry, for what has a date. An event, a season or a closed programme fits an access that expires better than an open-ended subscription.

What is worth knowing before you set it up

Page caching breaks the paywall. The paywall and SEO features do not work with any kind of page caching enabled. It is the first thing to check with your host.

Static files. Protecting PDFs, MP3s and similar files with access rules is only officially supported on Apache. It may work with Nginx, but without support; for that case there is the MemberPress Downloads add-on.

This is the core plugin. Forums, member directories, coaching, the app and the AI tools are separate add-ons: ClubCircles, ClubDirectory, CoachKit, AppKit and AI Foundation.

Getting MemberPress running: requirements and first steps

PHP 7.4, WordPress 6.0 and MySQL 8.0 or later, with MySQL NO_ZERO_DATE and strict mode turned off. It runs on self-hosted WordPress and on WordPress.com Business accounts, with any theme.

  1. Check page caching with your host, because the paywall does not work while it is active.
  2. Connect the gateway: enter its API keys and set up its notifications.
  3. Create the memberships and access rules, deciding what opens on day one and what is released later.
  4. Build the sign-up pages with ReadyLaunch and make a test purchase.

Other ways to build a membership in the catalogue

Paid Memberships Pro is a GPL, open source membership platform with nearly eighty add-ons to extend it. If your site is already a shop, WooCommerce Memberships decides who sees what according to their plan.

If you stay with MemberPress, the catalogue has add-ons for it: MemberPress Courses, to build and sell courses and MemberPress ClubCircles, which creates private forums inside the site.

Questions about MemberPress Pro

Yes. Dripping releases content by date, and access can expire.

Which payment gateways does it support?

Stripe, PayPal, Square and Authorize.net, offline payments and custom gateways.

It works with any theme, including a custom-built one.

Does it calculate VAT?

Can I use it with a caching plugin?
