About Meta Box Frontend Submission
Receiving content from others without handing out WordPress dashboard access
Accepting third-party content (listings, properties, guest articles) usually ends one of two ways: emails with attachments that someone copies by hand, or editor accounts with more permissions than they should have. Both cost time and both become unmanageable as volume grows.
On a site that lives off what others contribute, the bottleneck is not getting submissions but reviewing them. Meta Box Frontend Submission moves submission to the front end: the user fills in a form on a normal page and what comes in waits in the backend for review, much like comments do.
Meta Box Frontend Submission: the fields it supports and where it falls short
It is a Meta Box extension, so the form is built with the fields you define. It supports these post fields:
- ID: used to update an existing post instead of creating another one.
- Status: immediate publication, draft or review queue.
- Title, content and excerpt: the content uses a WYSIWYG editor.
- Date: with a date and time picker.
- Featured image.
On top of that, every Meta Box field type works in the form: WYSIWYG editor, date and time picker, slider, file upload, map, image, video and even field cloning.
The limits are worth knowing. It does not work on its own: it needs Meta Box, which is where you define the fields. Categories and tags are not a form field of their own, they are handled with the Meta Box taxonomy field type. And it is not a registration or login system: for sign-up, login and profile editing forms there is another Meta Box extension, MB User Profile.
Questions to settle before opening the form to the public
Is what users send published automatically?
That is up to you. You can set submissions to publish instantly, stay as drafts or go into the review queue.
Can already published posts be edited?
Yes. Users can create new posts or modify existing ones, and the ID field lets you update a specific one.
Do I need to code to place the form?
Not to insert it: a shortcode on any page is enough. What you do need is to define the fields with Meta Box.
Can the user choose a category or tags?
Yes, by adding a Meta Box taxonomy field to the form.
Properties, classified ads and a dashboard for every author
A property portal or classifieds site wins when the advertisers themselves do the work of uploading photos, location and details. With the map, image and video fields, each advertiser completes their listing on a single page, and you only have to review it.
People who submit content also get a dashboard where they can see what they have sent and edit or delete it. That spares you requests like «change the price of my ad» or «remove this photo».
The shortcode places the form, but you decide the status of submissions
Placing the form is the easy part: you insert it with a shortcode and the plugin takes care of saving the data, with no extra redirection code. What deserves your time before opening it is deciding which status submissions get. If the content comes from strangers, the prudent choice is the review queue, leaving immediate publication for trusted authors only.
Before launching, send a test submission from the front end and check three things: that each field arrives where you expect, that the submission appears in the backend with the status you chose, and that you can edit and delete it from the user dashboard.
