About Meta Box Group
Author 1, author 2, author 3: the field that multiplies out of control
When a piece of content has data that repeats (several authors, several tracks, several locations), you usually end up with fields numbered by hand, an endless edit screen and a client's editor lost among them. Meta Box Group is a Meta Box extension that gathers several fields into a group, and that group can be repeated, collapsed and reordered.
Whoever loads content every day doesn't think in loose fields, they think in "a book" or "a track". If the edit screen reflects that unit, they make fewer mistakes and work more comfortably; if it doesn't, the problem isn't solved with training, it's solved with design.
Meta Box Group: clone the whole block and move it with the mouse
The core feature is cloning: you repeat a group with all its sub-fields and sub-groups in one click, as many times as you need. Then you can reorder the copies by dragging them right on the post or page.
- Multi-level nested groups, with no limit on nesting levels, and everything nested can be cloned.
- Collapsible groups to hide what you're not working on, so the screen doesn't become a wall of fields.
- Numbered group titles, or titles taken from a sub-field value, so you know which block is which without expanding it.
- The collapsed or expanded state can be saved.
One row for all sub-fields instead of one per sub-field
WordPress stores each custom field in its own row of the metadata table, and with repeated data that grows fast. With this extension, the sub-fields of a group are saved together in a single row, which reduces the number of rows and makes database access easier.
From the book with several authors to the album with tracks
If you build book catalogs
A group can bring together format, publication date, publisher, cover and authors, with the option to add more authors. You clone the structure for each book and don't invent new fields every time.
If you publish music or lists with repeated items
An "album" content type with one group per track (title and whatever details you want) is filled in by repeating the block. Dragging reorders the tracks and collapsing keeps you from getting lost when there are many.
If you hand the site over to a client who edits daily
It's an improvement for the editor, not for the visitor.
How many levels does Meta Box Group handle? And other questions
Is there a nesting limit?
There is no cap on nesting levels, and every group, sub-group or field can be cloned.
Can I show the fields in columns?
By default they appear vertically, like any field. To place them horizontally, as columns in a grid, you combine it with the Meta Box Columns extension.
Does it work for posts and pages?
Yes, for posts, pages and custom content types, as well as forms.
Does it really reduce database rows?
Yes, because the sub-fields are saved in a single row instead of one per sub-field.
It needs Meta Box, and columns are separate
It isn't a standalone plugin: it's an extension that relies on Meta Box, so without it there's nowhere for it to work. The column layout isn't included either, it requires Meta Box Columns. And its job is to structure and organize data while editing: before buying it, check in the Meta Box demo how it fits the way you want to display that data.
