About Meta Box Template Extension
Defining fields in PHP works until you have to repeat them
Creating a meta box with its fields usually means a long, nested PHP array hidden in the theme or in a custom plugin. It works, but every time another site needs the same thing you have to open code, copy, adapt and hope you haven't missed a comma. The costly part of custom fields isn't creating them the first time, but reproducing them identically in the tenth project.
MB Template is a Meta Box extension that replaces that array with YAML text, a format designed so complex data reads almost like a document. You can define as many meta boxes as you want, with any type of field inside, and it supports all the parameters of meta boxes and fields.
Walkthrough with MB Template: a project data block, from site A to site B
Imagine you maintain several websites and all of them need the same data block on the edit screen. Here is how it works, step by step:
- You write the template. Instead of PHP, you describe the meta box and its fields in YAML.
- You adjust whenever needed. Changing a field name or one of its parameters means editing a line of text, at any time.
- You copy the template. It's text: you save it wherever you like and have it ready for the next project.
- You paste it on site B. The meta boxes and their fields appear without moving code from one site to another.
Three limits to be clear about before you start. First, it needs Meta Box installed: it is an extension and doesn't work on its own. Second, what you copy is the definition of the fields, not the content you have already entered in them. Third, you work by writing text: there is no visual drag-and-drop editor (Meta Box has another extension for that, MB Builder).
Questions before moving your fields to YAML
Do I need to know PHP?
Not to define fields with this extension: you write YAML, which is a fairly readable format. It is structured text, though, so if you have never used it, spend a little time understanding how it is organized before building a large template.
Does it add fields to categories or tags?
No, that is not its purpose. MB Template defines meta boxes and custom fields on the WordPress edit page. If you need fields for taxonomy terms, you need a different tool.
Can I change a template after creating it?
Yes. Field names and parameters can be changed whenever you want, by editing the text.
Can I reuse the same template on several websites?
Yes, that is exactly what it is for: you copy the text, paste it on the destination site, and the meta boxes and fields appear.
